22 'WINNETKA TALK September 18, 1926 Chicago Comes to Evanston Several important Chicago Business Houses have recognized the desir- ability of Evanston as a "Shopping Center." It's now over a year ago since we opened our Evanston Store and the results have been most gratifying. Evanstonians and residents in the other North Shore Suburbs have shown that they appreciate the con- venience of a local store--a store where "The Occasional Gift" can be selected from worth while mer- chandise reasonably priced. Spaulding and Company have long enjoyed an enviable reputation in Jewelry, Silverware, Watches, and other lines of merchandise sold by high class jewelry stores and this rep- utation is just as jealously guarded in Evanston as in Chicago or Paris. So we invite you to this store of ours in Evanston. You will find the same courtesy, intel- || ligent service and reasonable prices which make it a pleasure to "Shop at Spaulding's." SPAULDING & Co. Good singing contributes largely to the success of minstrel performances, and singing is where the North Shore Glee club does shine. The member- ship of the club also has unlimited tal- ent from which Stanton Wilhite of Winnetka promises to develop some real comedians by the time the show is staged, which will be either the lat- ter part of October or the first part of November. Prof. B. N. Hotton, of Chicago, will have charge of the train- ing of the club for its vocal numbers. It is planned to give the show at the Winnetka Woman's club. The North Shore Glee club was or- ganized two years ago, since which time there has been few changes in its personnel. At the present time, how- ever, the club announces it could use a few additional voices, especially first tenors. Those who might be interest- ed are requested to make application to Walter H. Klauke at the Winnetka Trust and Savings bank. Mr. and Mrs. James Nestor Raw- leigh and family, 592 Cherry street, have returned from Bay Head, N. J. where they visited Mr. Rawleigh's mother, Mrs. James H. Rawleigh. Mrs. Rawleigh and the children spent a month in Bay Head, Mr. Rawleigh joining them over Labor day, to return with them. --O-- Mrs. Lynn Roberts "entertained her bridge club at luncheon at Skokie club this week. Chinese Student Sees Education as China's Salvation According to Richard M. Sia, a Chinese student from the Fukien Christian university, Foochow, Ching, education and Christianity will do as much toward settling chaotic condi- tions in his native land as any other civilizing influence. He arrived this week at Northwestern university and is desirous of enrolling in the senior class. He met Dean Raymond A. Kent and is now well on the way toward be- coming a regular student at North- western. "I was one or the sixty-four Tsing Hwa students who have just come to the United States from government schools in China," he explained. "Be- sides this group, there were ninety- six self-supporting students from gov- ernment schools also arriving in America. I have a little capital and the first semester at Northwestern I hope to be able to make my way with- out working for a living but next semester I plan to do some extra work to earn needed money. Many of my fellow students have gone on to Bos- ton university, to Cornell and other eastern universities. We are not a part, however, of the Y. M. C. A. group that also has just reached this country. "Chinese conditions, as we all know, are not peaceful and much now de- pends upon the education of the masses. 1 intend to try to do my share and shall major in psychology and education at Northwestern and then return to China as a teacher. With this process of enlightening edu- cation going on in China, we have high hopes of some day seeing order es- tablished and our dear country out of the meshes of civil war and brig- andage."
