September 18, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 35 Alhambra Palace Inspiration for Granada Theatre The beauty in theatre building that is rapidly reaching out from loop lo- calities and bringing itself nearer and nearer to north shore picture fans, has its most recent exemplification in the Granada, the new Marks picture play- house located at Broadway and Devon avenue. The theatre has undergone a long and careful construction with effort bent on making it one of the loveliest of picture houses in the country. It has been developed from a Spanish motif suggested in the Alhambra palace, famed by Washington Irving in "The Alhambra," with exterior and interior carrying through the, same decorative idea with artistic magnifi- cence. The exterior of the playhouse is done in ivory and is highly ornamental, and it is surmounted by a 90-foot canopy said to be the longest of its kind in the country. The lobby is 100 feet long and 72 feet high, a grand stair- case at its end leading to a mezzanine floor given to a luxurious lounge. Par- ticular attention has been given to ven- tilation and hygienic equipment. The theatre according to its man- agers will be the only one outside the Loop with a consistent first run pol- icy. Benny Meroff, with his popular orchestra of 25 players, will provide the music. Albert F. Brown will ma- nipulate the great giant Wurlitzer or- gan. The opening will take place at 6 Saturday evening, the program fea- tured by a great Oriental spectacle, "Eastern Nights." Herbert Hurd, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hurd, 518 Sunset road, has been entertaining a classmate, Robert Shoe- maker of Miami, Fla., formerly of Win- netka, during the past week. They both attend the University of Illinois and have returned to Urbana to re- sume their studies. Both are "Phi Delts." RR. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Jenkins, 780 Rosewood avenue, Hubbard Woods, re- turned Sunday, September 12, from Sop Wipigaki, Lac du Flambeau, Nis. ---- Virginia Delay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold S.
