October 30, 1926 WINNETKA TALK EXPLORES THE ARTIC Wilhjalmur Stefansson to Speak of Eplorations Before Wilmette Sunday Evening Club October 31 Wilhjalmur Stefansson, scientist and explorer, will deliver an illustrated lec- ture at the Wilmette Sunday Evening club, Sunday, October 31. Mr. Stefan- sson presents a character of rare ac- complishments. He is in turn a man of letters, an author, and a lecturer. Born of Icelandic parents in Mani- toba, Canada, he came to the United States as a child and was brought up on the prairies of North Dakota. In 1603 he received from the University of Iowa the degree of A. B., after which he went to Harvard for post- graduate work. There he scholarship for one year and a fellow- ship for two years and during the last of these years he was a member of the teaching staff of the Department of Anthropology at Harvard. In 1906 he began his explorations aud in the years that followed spent ten winters and thirteen summers in the arctic regions. In this time he discovered four islands, now known as Brock, Borden, Laugheed, and Meig- hen, and established the principle of "living off of the land." On his last expedition he carried this still farther and proved that it could be applied to ice as well. Stefansson is a brilliant and successful writer and is the author of four books and a great many maga- zine articles.
