A -------- --" a Ig A------------------ November 13, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 11 PEASE IS SOLOIST Noted Bass-Baritone to Sing Tuesday at First Meeting of North Shore So- ciety at Home of Dwight Orcutts The North Shore MacDowell society opens its season Tuesday evening, No- vember 16, at the home of Dr. and ummm zea: Mrs. Dwight C. Orcutt in Hubbard Woods. An all American program is announced to be given by Rollin '| Pease, one of the outstanding bass- baritones of the country. This so- ciety reports a con- stant growth, not only from the ranks of artists but also among north shore resi- dents who realize I more and more . that creative art Rollin Pease needs the support of the public. The MacDowell colony is not a charity, a school, a summer resort, a sanatorium, or a camp. It is the first attempt to provide a place where art- ists may work to the best advantage, as a scientist works in a laboratory, an astronomer in an observatory, a surgeon in a hospital, an explorer fitted out with an expedition, an executive equipped with telephone and dicta- graph. The needs of the artist's workshop are less tangible, but no less expensive and hard to obtain. The colony can o more be self-supporting than can a university, a museum or the Acad- emy at Rome. It must have equip- ment and endowment. All over the country MacDowell societies are contributing their dues, thus assisting materially with running expenses, but what those interested are working towards is an adequate endowment fund to insure the colony's future. CALLED TO GARAGE FIRE The Winnetka Fire department was called to 1301 Asbury avenue at 6 o'clock Thursday morning to extin- guish a fire in the garage on the Ben- jamin P. Kiefer property. The fire originated from an overheated heat- ing plant in the garage. Damage to the building is estimated at about $500 and a car was damaged to the extent of about $150.
