MUSICAL ASSEMBLIES STARTED AT SKOKIE James Fentress Presents Negro Spirituals; Other Concerts Follow Through Year first of a series of special as- held in connection with a The semblies, music appreciation course, at the Skokie school, was given Tuesday morning, November 9, when James Fentress presented a half-hour recital of negro spirituals and secular folk songs. Mr. Fentress sang to his own accompaniment on a guitar and pre- faced each number by a brief des- cription of the setting in which it was originated. He has a first hand ac- quaintance with the original conditions under which these songs were con- ceived and consequently his presenta- tions were authentic. His program was enthusiastically received by the stu- dent body and a warm invitation has been extended for him to return when- ever it is conveneint for him to do so. Hear European Songs The second concert, which will be devoted to European folk songs, will be given November 22, and other num- bers of the series will occur there- after at intervals of two weeks. In February the simpler forms of piano composition will be treated. The first two concerts will be devoted chiefly to dance forms, while later ones will introduce some of the principal orches- One of these will be devoted entirely to the flute and clarinet; another to the violin, viola and cello; and a third to the more complex forms of piano composition. The last five numbers will present movements from sonatas and sym- phonies. Two pianos will be used in the presentation of one of these and a Debussy recital will provide study of modern music. The climax to the series comes in the form of two concerts by an artist string quartet. These concerts will also be given at each of the four Winnet- ka schools and the movements played presented in other programs and mu- sic classes. Approach Symphony Study The various forms in the series in- clude everything up to a study of sym- phony. It has been suggested that all who can, and especially those enrolled in the music appreciation courses, avail themselves of the opportunity to complete the study by attending the little symphony concerts which are be- ing given at the New Trier high school. Symphony, it is said, is a type of music that cannot be adequately presented mechanically. To fully ap- preciate it one must hear the actual playing. The three remaining concerts of the series will be given on Mon- day afternoons, November 15, Janu- ary 10, and February 7. Appreciation of the splendid co-op- eration given by the people of Win- netka in making the music apprecia- tion course possible has been expressed by the school authorities. Without this aid the course would have been absolutely impossible. = PAINT = of all kinds.
