cos 1 i rr November 13, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 17 First Victory Over (Chicago in Decade Looms for Wildcats For the first time in nearly ten years of annual football competition, North- western will meet Chicago with the odds in favor of the Purple when the two teams clash at Dyche stadium Saturday. Likewise it is the first time that the Maroons have traveled to Ev- anston for the big football classic of the year. Northwes- ern's decisive win over Purdue last Saturday raised the | stock of the Wild- cats considerably. Before the game with the Boiler- makers the power of the Purple was a bit uncertam since Indiana was regarded as weak. However, the 22- to-0 licking admin- istered to Coach Phelan's boys in- dicated that the Wildcats can well be regarded as one of the strongest teams in the middle west. The varied attack which the Purple unleashed against Purdue showed that the local team has an offense that will require some clever work to halt. The deceptive nature of the Purple plays baffled the Boiler- makers and enabled Baker, Lewis and Gustafson to break through for num- erous long gains. Greatest Purple Team The homecoming crowd which filled Dyche stadium Saturday left the stands convinced it had seen the great- est Northwestern team in history. There was no denying the advance of the Purple clad warriors. They tore their way through at will and only for a spell in the third quarter was Purdue able to stave off the thrusts of the Northwestern backs. It was in the third quarter that the Purple smashing game broke against the stone front presented by the Hoo- siers. Three times = Northwestern worked the ball down to within a few yards of the Boilermaker goal line, but each time was stopped for no gain. Despite the victory against Purdue, Coach Thistlethwaite has not per- mitted his team to become over-con- fident as the contest against the Ma- roons draws near. The Chicago team has developed considerable power in recent contests which reached its height in the game against Illinois last Saturday when the best the Illini could do was to push over one touchdown for a 7-to- 0 victory. Northwestern will send its strongest line-up into the game. All the players who played in the Purdue game came out of the conflict without injury. Ruddy Schuler, who was hurt in the Notre Dame game, was not used Sat- urday. His knee is expected to be mended completely by Saturday. The work of the Purple line, which showed to advantage in recent games, will be relied upon to stave off the smashing attack of the Maroons The famous pile driving tactics of Coach Stagg's elevens, which year after year have turned back the Purple, will have to break through a forward wall which stopped Notre Dame and Purdue. Coach Thistlethwaite will base his offense upon Baker, Lewis, Gustafson and Griffith. These four backfield men proved unusually effective against Purdue, and are expected to repeat in similar fashion against the Maroons. Stagg will present Captain Marks and Stan Rouse as his two backfield aces. Both are capable ball carriers and will bear some close watching. R.
