November 20, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 5 HAPGOOD TO SPEAK Internationally Famous Journalist and Diplomat to Address Sunday Eve- ning Club November 21 Norman Hapgood, noted as journal- ist, diplomat and lecturer, will speak club, November 21, on the subject, "What is Progress Today?" Madame Edith Bideau Normelli will be the solo- ist at the services. Norman Hapgood has been promi- mently connected with public issues since 'he became editor of Collier's Weekly in 1905. Leaving that publi- «cation in 1912, he became chairman of the committee that nominated and elected Mayor Mitchell in New York. He was for three years editor of Har- per"s Weekly--until its merger with the Independent. Mr. Hapgood was president of the League of Free Nations' association early 'in 1919, when he was selected by President Wilson to go as Minis- ter to Denmark. He spent the winter of 1921 in Washington, D. C., writing special ar- ticles for the Univeral Service, and as editor of Hearst's International until its merger with the Cosmopolitan. He is author of books on the lives of Lincoln, Washington, and Webster, and his latest book, published in 1921, called "The Advancing Hour," and deals with current problems. RETURNS FROM EAST C. W. Washburne, superintendent of the Winnetka public schools, who returned from an extended speaking tour of a number of eastern cities last Sunday, also spoke before the depart- ment of education of the University of Iowa Thursday.
