"Two or three years ago there were half a dozen four cylinder cars selling above $1,200 or even more," he pointed out. "Today not a single four cylinder car of consequence sells above $900. That field has given way before the six. "Exactly the same conditions exist in the higher price six cylinder held to- day. For several years the American public has been buying sixes selling for more than $1,500 at the rate of be- tween 200,000 and 450,000 cars a year. It will be interesting to witness that situation change under the influence of the straight eight. Today no sensible manufacturer would endeavor to pro- duce a four selling above $1,000 any more than he would a one cylinder car. His four might be a splendid car. But the public just wouldn't buy it. "The reason for the change in these motor car markets are quite obvious to anyone who has given them careful study and who has consistently noted the buying tendencies of the motor car purchasing public which, today, is vir- tually the entire American people. "Fifteen or eighteen years ago, the four cylinder car became the pinnacle of fine automobiles, regardless of price, supplanting the one and two cylinder cars which had, theretofore, been the prevailing types. The reputations of such companies as Cadillac, Stutz, Mercer and others of the old organiza- tions producing cars of high quality for those days, were founded and fostered with a four cylinder car. Still later we saw Dodge, Essex, Hupmobile, Buick, Nash and several others rise to po- sitions of leadership in the industry with fours.
