December 4, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 19 CHRISTMAS SEAL SALE NOW IN FULL SWING Children in Schools Act as Sales- men in Annual Tuberculosis Fund Drive The children of the North Shore have tackled the Christmas seal campaign like a whirlwind and every day each school chalks up an increased sales to- tal. Teachers are co-operating with pupils in this sale that is expected to easily exceed past records. began on Thanksgiving day, and the children have carried on each day with increasing enthusiasm. Eighty-five million seals have been let loose like a snow storm in Chicago and Cook county. Like magic the donu- ble-barred cross in brilliant red lights is appearing about the city and sub- urbs. Travelers north on Michigan avenue are confronted with a blazing | cross representing the Christmas seals. Building owners displaying them have | contributed the crosses. The money received from the sale of the seals is used by the Chicago Tuber- culosis institute toward the cure and prevention of tuberculosis here in the community. The $225,000 that is ex- pected is needed for the fast develop- ing program of public health work of which the seals are the sole source of funds. Last year's campaign nearly $200,000. Everyone has been urged to buy as many seals as possible. After they have bought them, they are asked to use them as well, on all letters and pack- ages. The post office has requested that they be used on the back of let- ters, not on the address side. Prominent army and navy surgeons Hugh S. Cumming, surgeon general, have endorsed the Christmas seals. The sale netted | Public Health Service bureau, has writ- | ten to Dr. Linsly R. Williams, who is | managing director of the National Tu- | berculosis association: "Few movements of the last two de- | cades have contributed so much to the | health and welfare of the American | people as that headed by the national, | |state and local tuberculosis associa- | | tions." A great factor in the gradually de- | clining death rate and tuberculosis and |other communicable diseases has been the support of these non-official organ- izations such as the tuberculosis asso- | ciations in stimulating communities all over the United States to realize their | official responsibility for community | health, Mr. Cumming states, in com- | mending the work of the association. Dr. Milton H. Foster, in charge of | the Marine hospital in Chicago and Dr. | H. B. Orr, surgeon general for Illinois, | { both heartily endorse the Christmas | | seals.
