December 11, 1926 WINNETKA TALK GEN. REILLY SCORES DISARMAMENT PROGRAM Former Resident and Famous World War Leader Honors Past Commander of Legion Winnetka post No. 10, American egion, was highly honored at its meeting Monday evening, by the pres- ence of Gen. Henry J. Reilly, formerly Colonel of the 149th Field artillery during the World war, a war corres- pondent of note, an authority on mili- tary tactics and a former resident of the village. General Reilly is himself a member of Winnetka post, and deemed it a great pleasure to have this opportun- ity to meet with fellow members. He was given added pleasure by being called upon to present, for the Post, a beautiful medal to Edward R. Lewis, who served as its commander during the past year. The presentation was made in a dignified and soldierly man- ner and was doubly appreciated by Past Commander Lewis, coming as it did from his comrades and through so distinguished a soldier as General Reilly. The general, during his brief visit in Winnetka, is a guest at the home of his brother, John Rice Reilly, 640 Blackthorn lane. New Commander Presides The Legion meeting was presided over by Commander Frank W. Blatch- ford, who recently assumed the office, and was attended by a large number of Post members. During the evening General Reilly delivered an interesting address, in which he deplored in strong terms the reduction of armament and especially denounced the propaganda for further disarmament. At the same time he pleaded that he might not be misun- derstood as favoring war, except when war is necessary in the defense of the nation and the principles for which it stands. He heartily endorsed the foreign im- migration policy of this country and stressed the importance of the nation! maintaining its present high standard of living, the like of which there is nothing to compare, in the world. And General Reilly, from his world travels | and experience in other nations, spoke with authority which impressed every one of his hearers. He endorsed what he was pleased to term the "bars" which this nation maintains against foreign made articles manufactured by labor abroad who live on a scale with- out comparison to the high plane of the American citizen and American standards. Lauds Memorial Plan General Reilly praised the movement looking to the erection of a Winnetka Memorial to the ten Gold Star heroes, but urged every member of the Post to see that the inscription thereon shall be such that it will give to fu- ture generations the impression that it is a privilege and the noblest of duties to give their lives, when necessary, in defense of their country, rather than to inculcate in the minds of coming generations the false hope that there will be no more war. In his references to conditions in China, General Reilly called attention to them as they have existed for many years and as they exist today. This, he declared, is typical of what may be expected, in due course of time in this or any other country that neglects to provide an army and navy adequate to its defense and to enforce its prin- ciples, if necessary.
