Cage Quintet Opens Conference Schedule Saturday Northwestern's basketball squad, much the wiser from its recent en- counters with the strong Notre Dame five, will open its conference season here Saturday night in an engagement with Illinois at Patten gymnasium. The Purple quintet showed considerable power in the contest with the Irish last Monday night and with a full week in which to perfect its faults should be ready to put up a formidable front against the Illini. Coach Maury Kent has his working along at a fast clip and should they get going there is no telling just how powerful an attack they will pre- sent. In the engagement with the Irish the Northwestern squad weakened somewhat on offense. A large number of shots which ordinarily lodge in the basket went wild enabling the visitors to run off with a 27 to 21 victory. Illinois will bring a somewhat un- tried squad to Evanston. The visitors have a number of new men in their boys lineup who are rapidly rounding into shape. With the new seating arrangement at Northwestern the gym can now ac- | commodate over 6,000 patrons. The entire stands were filled to overflow- ing last week and a similar crowd is expected to be on hand for the Illinois fracas. Russo, of 725 Sheri- dan road, Wilmette, attended a dinner which was given at the Palmer house, recently, for Miss Fredericka Blank- ner, a well known student at the Uni- versity of Chicago and who recently returned from Italy where she received her degree in Italian literature. By re- quest, she spoke impromptu of the "New Italy." She said, "I am delighted to tell you how enthusiastic I am about Mussolini and his New Italy. There is much to be said. Mussolini is a very easy man to talk to, very democratic and very practical. He is the man that Italians need. During an interview with Ameri- can editors, he referred to the United States in a most complimentary way. He expects from America a new phil- osophy, a philosophy of practicality, from which the Italians must learn. Remarkable Orator "Il Duce is a remarkable orator and when he speaks about fascismo, he is very convincing. An immediate con- tact with the Italian people and a per- sonal contact with Il Duce is so con- vincing that all the false reports which we hear are suddenly shattered. The things which he does are fine, pro- gressive and suitable to shifting condi- tions. What he has done is almost un- believable. Italy is a nation of geniuses, and that is, perhaps, I must say, a dis- advantage to themselves, as a genius is seldom practical. "Mussolini wants to develop in his people the sense of practicality, in which they are lacking, gradually, but surely bringing them to his sense of view. Even if not Facists, every Italian is for Mussolini. "T had the opportunity of having sev- eral interviews with Il Duce, and when speaking of his people he said, 'yes, we must become practical, we have built a bridge in six hours. "I was particularly impressed with and strongly admired the Italian peas- ants, who are giving new power to the nation, Mussolini is obviously a scien- tific economist. "With the Vatican he has shown his greatest political genius--pulling to- gether. No doubt, in ten years, Italy is going to be one of the leading na- tions. Americans who go through Italy are strongly impressed with the won- derful system of Facismo. To me, Italy is the cradle of Facismo that is going to spread all over Europe. Vio- lence, with Mussolini, is only a weapon to obtain justifiable ends. "Allow me to say a word of praise for the schools.
