Petitions for presentng the propo- sition to the voters at the spring elec- tion have been prepared. The law permits the village to levy a two mill tax for band purposes. The fund thus provided assures a musical organiza- tion of a high type, one of which the village will always be justly proud and at the same time at a cost so infin- itesimally small, per capita, that the cost to each individual is really negli- gible when compared with what the village, as a whole, is able to main- tain. The Chamber of Commerce is back of this movement, Lee Adams says the organization of a band under the conditions which are now possible, should not be confused with the bands of former days, which were formed and maintained by a few individual music lovers who were forced to shoulder all the expense of mainten- ance and literally give their services to the public. Better Music Results This condition resulted in ultimate neglect of the band's best interest, as it eventually became a burden to the organization. It was unable to pro- gress in the way of preparing and rendering the high class music which a municipal organization may do to the general pleasure of the community. The proposed Winnetka band, Mr. some- thing like twenty-eight or thirty pieces, properly uniformed and provided with the best of instruments and with com- petent instructors to bring out the best talent in the members. Music of a high class is thus assured, and the summer evening concerts and band programs on special occasions in the village, would be in keeping with the fine musical appreciation of residents of the north shore. To Form Junior Band Furthermore, Mr. Adams points out, musical training of children in the public schools of Winnetka, is being featured to a greater extent, perhaps, than in most schools, and the pres- ence in the village of a band, the type of which is proposed for the new municipal organization, would prove an added incentive to the Winnetka youth who is taking music, to take added interest in this course. Mr. Adams says it also is planned to have a junior band, comprising boys and girls who are attending school. Country Day Alumni Elect Bob Clark New President The Alumni Association of the North Shore Country Day school was created and organized December 27 at a meet- ing at the school of the graduates home from college for vacation and of those who are living in or near Chi- czgo. There were seventy-seven alum- ni present. The first senior to graduate from North Shore Country Day school finished college two years ago.
