a - January 22, 1927 WINNETKA 'TALK 33 STANLEY CLAGUE DIES AT CHICAGO HOSPITAL Widely Known Leader in Ad-| vertising Field and Former Winnetka Resident Stanley Clague, formerly of Win- netka, one of the founders and for the past ten years managing director of the Audit Bureau of Circulation, died at 8:30 o'clock, Wednesday eve- ning, January 19, at the Henrotin hos- pital Chicago. Mr. Clague had been in- disposed for several months, but con- tinued working until ten days before his death, ing the seriousness of his condition. He was born on the Isle of Man, off the Coast of England, April 16, 1872, coming to the United States when he was twenty years of age. His first po- sition was that of secretary to the late Dr. Charles W. Eliot, president of Harvard college. For a number of vears he served as head of the Adver- tising Service department of The Credit Publishing company of Phila- delphia. Leaving that organization in 1908 he organized the Clague Adver- tising Agency, which consolidated in March of 1915 with Taylor, Critchfield and company. Mr. Clague became vice-president of this company, which was then known as Taylor-Critchfield- Clague Advertising Agency. Upon the organization of the A. B. C. Mr. Clague became a director immedi- ately, serving in that capacity until he hecame managing director. He served on the executive committee, and as chairman of the Standard Form and Credit committee. He served in various official capacities, as president of the Affiliated Agents Association of Amer- ica, and was the first president of the Western Advertising association, serv- ing for three terms. He was a leader in the organization of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, and a member of the National Com- mission of International Advertising associations. At one time he was vice- president of the National Outdoor Posters association, and was on the executive committee of the Chicago Advertising council. Mr. Clague was a , member. of the White Paper club. In 1892 he married Miss Birks, daughter of the Rev. Richard Birks, a Unitarian clergyman, who had pastorates in both England and America. He was a resident of Win- netka, for many years, although at the time of his death he lived at 819 Michi- gan avenue, Evanston.
