"It is good for men's souls to get out in the country," said Henry Swift many years ago, and characterized the enjoyment of the outdoors as man's greatest heritage. Swift thought of sport for men alone. Today, not only men but wo- men and the junior members of the family want to play golf and naturally favor the clubs that supply their wants. Few can do so adequately. One of those that can, called "Rolling Green," on Rand road, provides a 3,000 yard course of nine holes in response to the new order. It is beautifully rolling, well wooded and has many natural haz- ards including the famous bull rushes, graveyard of a thousand balls. Golfer's Paradise The organizers of Rolling Green pictured in their dreams a club out in the country, yet close to be easily ac- cessible, out on the hills where the breezes blow every day, away from the dust and smoke of the city and the crowding people, yet very accessible in time and distance. So the rolling quarter section was selected near where Central and Rand road join. Since the land was bought the Cermak Broad Road committee has located the super-highway to Milwau- kee at the west edge of the club. Cen- tral road is planned to be a 100-foot east and west superway from Sheridan road and Isabella streets between Ev- anston and Wilmette all the way to Elgin. So members of Rolling Green feel that they are sitting pretty from the standpoint of quick transportation. Those who want to get to the club from business in Chicago take one of the fifty-four daily Northwestern trains between Arlington Heights and Chica- go and taxi two miles from the station to the club. Special Men's Course The men's course is a championship 18 hole course, 6500 feet long. It is one of the best about Chicago and was de- signed by W. H. Diddle, one of the foremost club architects in the country. One hole is 575 yards long and will test the boys with the mighty wallop. Another is very short, across a lake to the green. The clubhouse is nearly finished. It was designed by H. B. Wheelock, president of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, whose son is credited with having first had the idea of a club on the hills with a separate course for women and jun- iors. The clubhouse is a low, rambling building with a beautful outdoor danc- ing floor overlooking the course, din= ing rooms, lounges, lockers and show- ers for men and women, swimming pool and other facilities. Near the club house will be tennis courts. In the winter the lake will be used for skat- ing and some of the slopes lend them- selves to the toboggan and ski. The financial side is carefully bud- geted. The 160% acres was bought for considerably less than $500 an acre-- a very favorable figure in this territory, real estate experts unanimously agree. When the roster of membership shall have been completed, the land and all improvements, including the clubhouse, greens, grading and drainage, will have been paid for in full. Consequently dues can be kept low because the large annual interest payments usual to country clubs will not exist for Rolling Green. While the club is naturally anxious to complete the membership from those who will want to be life-long friends and companions, it has so protected itself financially that five years can be taken to complete the roster, insuring the possibility of most careful selec- tion. The club was organized by Evans- ton people and more members are from that suburb than any other. Among those from Wilmette are Franklin Bowes, Benjamin Bills, William C. Buethe, Elmer A. Claar, James Cross- ley, W. B. Davis, James D. Nielson, Frank Randall, W. W. DeBerard, C. E. Drayer, C. A. Lundberg, Charles Olewine, Everett Trenkler and H. R. Van Gunter. Winnetka is represented by such well known villagers as E. R. Cogswell, Ernest E. Ellis, E. R. Reichman, A. B. Wayne, and William Riley Harvey. Frank A. Brewer and R. E.
