February 12, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Three Purple Teams in Action This Week Against Big 10 Foes Three Northwestern athletic teams will see action this week end against Big Ten opponents. The basketball team will resume play again after sev- eral weeks of idleness during the exam- ination period. The cagers will take on Minnesota at Minneapolis Saturday night in the first of a two-game series, the second of which will be played here later in the season. At the same time the swimming team will tackle In- diana here while the wrestlers go to Columbus for an engagement with the Buckeye matmen. Northwestern's cagers have yet to win their first conference game and they hope to annex it aganst the Gophers who likewise are in a similar position. The lads from the north have dropped all their games by a very close margin but have not been able to get going sufficiently to win. Coach Kent will probably send his same line-up against Minnesota as has started the other games. However, Gleichmann may be unable to start be- cause of his ailment. Should he be forced to the sidelines it is likely that McKay will break in at forward. Fisher will perform at center as usual and Rusch will probably be at the other forward position although he too is bothered considerably by a sore foot which has forced him to stop practic- ing for some time. A stone bruise on the back of his heel is causing much pain, and may keep the little fellow out of the game for a while. Johnsos and Levison will be at the guard positions. EXPECT TO SINK HOOSIERS The swimming team, fresh from its overwhelming victory over Purdue last Saturday night, should have little trouble in scuttling the Indiana splash- ers. The Purple will be strengthened by the addition of Colbath, fancy diver, and Miller, back stroker, who are now eligible to compete. They have now completed their one year residence as required by the conference. Northwestern seems to have another of its strong swimming teams such as represented the Purple in past seasons. Capt. Paul Manovitz is a speedy free style swimmer and will perform in the 40 and 100 yard dashes. He won both these events against Purdue. Omar Miller is one of the best back stroke men. in the conference, while Wally Colbath stands out above all other divers. Coach Tom Robinson is not promis- ing another championship team this year but expects his boys to be up around the top. Michigan and Min- nesota are represented by unusually strong teams and will give the Purple much opposition. The Northwestern water polo team got off to a good start by defeating Purdue 8 to 3. The Pur- ple team won the championship last fall and hopes to retain the title this vear WRESTLERS MEET OHIO The Purple wrestling team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, Saturday for an en- gagement with the Buckeye matmen. Northwestern is weakened considerably by the ineligibility of Ruddy Schuler, star heavyweight. However, Coach Stuteville hopes to prep Justin Dart for Schuler's position. Northwestern trounced Chicago re- cently, but has dropped matches to In- diana and Michigan. Ohio has a strong team this year and will give the Wildcats considerable opposition. C. and other points in the East. They expect to return home about May 1, to remain a short time, and will then motor westward, visiting Yellowstone National park, journeying on up through the Pacific Northwest, arriv- ing in Washington sometime in Au- gust.
