ia 58 EE Sp February 19, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 19 LAUNCH ALUMNI FUND AT NORTHWESTERN U $50,000 by June Is Goal of Uni- versity Grads on Endowment of $1,000,000 A new epoch in the phenomenal growth of Northwestern university is heralded with the formal launching this week of the new annual alumni fund to be known as the Foundation, according to President Walter Dill Scott. Fifty thousand dollars by June is set as the goal for this first year, which is the equivalent to the interest at five per cent on an endowment of $1,000,000. Even before the fund was officially inaugurated yesterday more than $10,- 000 of that sum have already been con- tributed, beginning with a $1,000 dona- tion by Nathan William MacChesney, president of the Foundation. Among the many distinguished alum- ni of Northwestern university enthusi- astically endorsing the new fund are: Judge Elbert H. Gary, '67, chairman of the board of directors of the United States Steel Corporation; William Hard, '00, and Edwin Balmer, 02, fa- mous writers; Dr. Herman N. Bunde- sen, '09, health commissioner of Chi- cago; Dr. Glenn Frank, '12, president of the University of Wisconsin; Dr. Herbert Hadley, '94, Chancellor of Washington university; Dr. Daniel Marsh, '06, president of Boston uni- versity; former Governor Pierce of Oregon; Dr. Charles H. Mayo, Dr. Isaac Abt, Judge Martin Gridley and numerous others. These celebrated graduates of North- western university all exhort their fel- low alumni to rally to the support of this Foundation which promises to be one of the most vital sources of revenue of the institution, as it has be- come at Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth and all of the larger uni- versities which have similar funds. Last year alone Yale raised $600,000 in voluntary contributions, the equivalent to the interest from a permanent en- dowment of $6,000,000. Gary Lauds Projects "One of the most important projects ever undertaken by Northwestern uni- versity," is the way Judge Elbert Gary describes the program in a special article in the "Wildcat," the anual of- ficial publication of the Foundation, is- sued this week. "It is important not only as a great financial asset which can and will make Northwestern uni- versity one of the greatest institutions of learning in America, but also in af- fording the alumni an active and per- sonal part in the control of its des- tinies, cementing the bond of allegiance 'between them and their Alma Mater., "The professors of our universities are woefully underpaid, considering their extensive training and the tremen- dous and vital responsibilities with which they are charged. The annual contributions of the alumni to the sup- port of this Foundation will go a long way towards remedying this unfortu- nate condition." The three main purposes of the Foundation are to increase the salary standards of the faculty, to help finance the $25,000,000 new building program already under way; which will give Northwestern university two of the most picturesque and magnificent campuses in the United States and to loan funds to deserving students. The contributions are collected by specially delegated representatives of each class in each department of the university, known collectively as the Advisory council.
