The local champions have drawn St. Charles for their first game at 7:30 Friday night. Indications have been pointing to pretty strong competition at Joliet but when the boys boarded the coaches for the trip down Thursday, things also pointed to a "free ride" for St. Charles and all other comers. "If determina- tion and Duke Child's skill count for anything--and Evanston claims it counts for quite a bit"--the boys de- clared Thursday, "it's a straight ride, no stops and a fast train to Champaign for a try at the State meet next week." In the New Trier-Evanston game at the Waukegan tournament last Fri- day, the spectators were treated to one of the fastest and hardest fought games of this season. Slipping first to Evanston and then to New Trier, the lead changed sides so fast that the scorekeepr found it almost impossible to keep his board straight and the ex- cited fans began to suffer from an overworked vocal ensemble. Finally a free throw by Hoerber tied the score and a basket by Waddy Paletti cinched the victory 30 to 28 as the gun went off. Win Easy Victory The second of the contests was won so easily that it might have been called a practice match and Gurnee walked off of the floor defeated by a 36 to New Trier landslide. Considerable ex- citement was caused just before the game started by the Gurnee mascot. Walking on to the floor, a miniature dude dressed all in bright orange, he dropped five out of six baskets in quick succession, apparently setting an example for his older brothers. They, however, forgot to get started and the local boys chalked up another "leg on the championship journey." In the championship game, New Trier found themselves confronted by the formidable Deerfield basket-hawks and there ensued another one of those games that long stories are told about. The game was a grill throughout; moreover a rough one, and some six- teen points were scored by the locals on free throws. Hoerber started the scoring with a free throw and from then on it was nip and tuck. As the gun sounded the end of the first quar- ter the score hoard registered 5 to 5. New Trier then buckled in to even more strenuous work and at the half had tipped "Dame Fortune" to their side and had gained the long end of a 11 to 8 score. After the rest period, another close fought battle carried the score to 16 to 13, New Trier still lead- ing. The game finally came to a close and New Trier had won once and for all time the 1927 district basketball title. Give "Treasure Island" for Wilmette Children A special performance of "Treasure Island" was given for children of the seventh and eighth grades of the Wil- mette schools at the School of Speech of Northwestern university Wednes- day, March 9.
