According to Dean Irving S. Cutter, head of Northwestern Univer- sity Medical school, the medical clinic in the Ward Memorial building, can- not function efficiently without a modern hospital adjacent to the clinic "The Northwestern Medical clinic started with less than 125 patients a day, self-respecting citizens who through long continued illness or other causes are financially unable to employ a regular physician," explain- ed Dean Cutter. "Now we have as many as 250 out-patients a day,--per- sons who are ill and who seek our free clinic for proper care and for cure if possible. Many of these pa- tients are hospital cases. Many re- quire, at once, hospital attention and we must send them to a good hospital. The Northwestern Medical clinic is securing excellent co-operation with several hospitals in the city, notably, St. Luke's, Wesley Memorial, Michael Reese, and Cook County. On the other hand, the demand for hospital beds from our clinical patients is greater than these hospitals can sup- ply, and in this connection Passavant hospital will play a very important part in the proper care of hundreds and thousands of the people of Chi- cago. "The Passavant Memorial hospital offers a real investment in humanity. The directors are Chicago citizens of the highest standing and responsibility. They realize that it will be futile to erect an inadequate building, one that in a few months' time would be wholly outgrown. The original amount sought, therefore, must be completed and the additional amount required ($700,000) should be forthcoming from Chicago philanthropists within the next few weeks. The need is present and urgent. It is confidently antici- pated that the well known generosity of Chicago citizens will early complete the quota required."
