LaSalle St. Main 0250 EXTEND ELEVATION Evanston Officials Told "L" Right-of- way Is to Be Elevated to Wilmette South Limits Engineers of the Chicago, Milwau- kee and St. Paul railroad company have indicated to Evanston city offi- cials their intention of carrying through this year the elevation of the Chicago Rapid Transit company tracks from Church street, Evanston, north to the Wilmette south limits. This declaration was made by the rail- road officials in the course of a dis- cussion of the renewal of the railroad's franchise in Evanston. The right-of- way of the Chicago Rapid transit through Evanston is leased from the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul rail- road. Agreement over the proposed fran- chise to the railroad which includes up- to-date plans for elevating the tracks from Church street to the north city limits, was reached at a meeting of the railroad committee of the Evanston council Monday of this week. Rail- road officials have indicated they will start the $2,000,000 elevation project this year. Subways in the new ordinance will be 40 feet wide with the exception of Central street which will be 46. The old franchise provided for streets only 23 and 27 feet wide but, acting upon the proposal of Mayor Bartlett, the wider streets were authorized. For a number of years the road has operated under an ordinance which provided for the elevation; but each year the time limit has been .ex- tended because of financial conditions of the road. This year, however, rail- road officials have planned to put the big improvement through.
