Tr) NEAR EAST PIONEER | SPEAKS HERE SUNDAY : Capt. Joel I. Connolly to Tell Congregational Church People | of Relief Work Needs Sunday, April 3, will be observed in Winnetka as Near East Relief Sun- day. Following the morning sermon at the Congregational church, Capt. Joel I. Connolly will speak briefly of this work. An opportunity will be given at this time to make gifts and pledges to the Near East cause. Captain Connolly is a pioneer in Near East relief work, being one of the first nine men to enter Turkey to engage in that welfare enterprise. The prin- cipal part of his duties was that of combating the great epidemics of dis- ease which were ravaging the under- nourished impoverished Christian refugees. Built Those Hospitals He built and equipped three hos- pitals; constructed water works and sewerage systems and inaugurated other means to correct the jnsanitary conditions he found there. He disin- fected thousands of migratory refugees in the refugee camps in order to over- come the terrible scourge of typhus fever. In addition, Captain Connolly re- built roads and bridges which had been blown up and destroyed during the fighting, so that it would be pos- sible to get supplies into the interior where no railroads penetrated. While building one of these roads he discov- ered and excavated a tomb said to be five hundred years older than that of King Tut-ankh-Amen. Captain Connolly is a graduate of Harvard university and holds two de- grees in engineering from the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology. He is well acquainted, through personal observation, with the conditions thoughout Europe, having visited be- fore, during and since the war, prac- tically all the countries of Europe, and is therefore in a position to ap- praise the relative necessity for relief work in different places. He was awarded a Distinguished Service medal in recognition of his services in Syria, Palestine and Turkey. Not Near East Employe He is not an employe of the Near East Relief, nor has he any official connection with the enterprise. He is the Government officer in charge of sanitary engineering work in ten states. However, because of his inti- mate personal knowledge of -condi- tions in the Near East, and his inter- est in the relief work, he lends his assistance when he can do so without detriment to his official duties.
