April 2, 1927 WINNETKA TALK GLENCOE YOUTH WINS TRIP TO NORTHLANDS Harry F. Keator, Jr., Builds Bet- ter Bird Houses to Enjoy Trip Through Alaska A year ago last winter when Harry F. Keator, Jr. the twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Keator, of 254 Franklin road, Glencoe, learned through a message, which he herd over the radio, of the Alaska trips for boys, sponsored by George Buchanan, millionaire philanthropist of Detroit, then and there he resolved that he was going to be a member of the party making the tour in 1927. And he is. Harry has earned, all by himself, the necessary $125 which he will be required to pay to enjoy this month of travel, by building and sell- ing bird houses. He has not only banked the required amount, but is also well along with the second $125 which is advanced by Mr. Buchanan and which each boy making the trip pledges he will return to Mr. Buchanan; without interest, any time within ten years. The parents of the boys are required to pay the remaining third of the cost of the trip. The $125 which the boys repay Mr. Buchanan, goes in- to a fund from which advances are made each year for other boys com- prising the travel group. Lesson in Self-Reliance Not only is Harry Keator, Jr., to profit from the trip he has earned, in the way of valuable knowledge he will gain in going over the territory in- cluded in the carefully planned itiner- ary, but he has also acquired a con- fidence in himself in the achievement of what he set out to do, something which his parents feel will be of bene- fit to him throughout his life. When Harry first resolved to make the trip, the next question was, "how can I earn $125?" Harry knew he could build bird houses, but would there be a market for $125 worth of them? Building bird houses, Harry has found, is like any other worth-while thing in life; one's services are in de- mand if the product of that labor is conscientiously and efficiently expend- ed. Builds "Better Homes" And Harry built good bird houses. He built better bird houses than he had ever constructed before, and that has been one of his hobbies for a long time. But he started in to earn $125 at his hobby, and he builded better than he knew, for soon his reputation as a builder of scientifically construct- ed, artistically designed and neatly ex- cuted houses began to spread far and near. When he was only eight years of age he earned enough money build- ing bird houses to buy his bicycle. Last spring he sold sixty-three wren houses and a number of blue bird houses, and this vear, in addition to the wren and blue bird style of architecture, he is branching out into the more elaborate styles of residences so popular with the martin family. The basement at his home is his workshop, and here he spends all his time out of school, de- signing, building and painting scores of Keator's Homes for Birds, which now are in demand, not only locally, but even in neighboring states. The journey will be started July 4, from Detroit, to Chicago; thence to Winnipeg, Calgary, up through the Canadian Pacific Rockies, Vancouver, Alaska, thence back to Seattle, Port- land, Spokane, Butte, and Bozeman, Montana, thence down along the Mis- sissippi for about 150 miles from St. Paul and Minneapolis and home. At the different stops in various cities, civic organizations make the stop-overs worthwhile, and show the boys all there is to see. Last summer, seventy-one boys made the trip.
