Mr. Temple has since tendered his resig- nation to engage in Red Cross work elsewhere. Evanston is enrolled as a branch of the Chicago chapter and annually makes a marked contribution of work and funds for its maintenance. Mrs. James A. Patten is chairman of the Evanston branch, and in this office, since the World war, has done a no- table work for the great relief organi- zation. Greater demands for service than existed during the war are being made on the Red Cross forces by 32,000 dis- abled American war veterans in hos- pitals throughout the country, Dr. Thomas E. Green, a national director of the Red Cross, said in an address at the luncheon. More war veterans are breaking down each year than are recovering, he said. Thetas to Give Annual Benefit Party April 217 The Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae association have set Wednesday, April 27, as the date for their annual card party for the benefit of their house fund. The entire Evanston Country club has been engaged for the event, and dainty refreshments and prizes are promised by the committee. Tickets may be procured at the Theta circulat- ing library in the Book Shop of Ev- anston. Evanston patronesses are: Mrs. George H. Peaks, Mrs. Frank T. Mur- ray, Mrs. Charles W. Spofford, Mrs. William S. Mason, Mrs. James S. Oates, Mrs. James T. F. Orchard, Mrs. Carl Williams, Mrs. Grace Holmes, Miss Alta Miller, Mrs. Walter D. Steele, Mrs. Mark Cresap, Mrs. Wal- ter D. Strong, Mrs. H. W. Bennett, Mrs. Henry Kitchell Webster and Mrs. Scott Brown. Births Decrease in 1926 But Far Exceed Deaths Births outnumbered deaths by 48,- 827 in Illinois last year with 1,281 fewer births and 3,733 more deaths recorded than were reported in 1925, according to official statistics released by Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, state health director. These figures show a net gain in population from this source of slightly more than one-half of one per cent and a rise of about one per square mile in density of population. The birth rate per 1,000 people is one of the lowest on record but the death rate, although higher than for 1925, is still well beneath the average for the decade ending with 1920.
