rr April 16, 1927 WINNET KA TALK 37 Many Schools Enter Theater Tournament at N. U. This Month Nine, colleges already have entered the second annual Northwestern uni- versity theater tournament for the Cumnock Cup, to be held on April 21. 22 and 23, in Annie May Swift hall on the Evanston campus. The en- trants to date follow: Albion college, Albion, Mich.; State Teachers' college, Valley City, North Dakota; West Virginia university, Morgantown, W. Va.; Berea college, Berea, Kentucky; Evansville college, Evansville, Ind.; Kansas State Agri- cultural college, Manhattan, Kans.: State Normal college, Bowling Green, Ohio: Western State Normal school, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Grinnell college, Grinnell, Towa. A few years ago Dr. Robert L. Cum- nock, founder of the School of Speech of Northwestern university, conceived the idea that if an annual theatrical tournament were held, the results ulti- mately would be higher standards both in college dramatics and in the national theatrical world. According- lv. Dr. Cumnock offered a prize of $250 to the winning school and stipu- lated that, whereas the contest should be held on the Evanston campus of Northwestern, the university's school of dramatics should not he permitted to compete. Hence, Northwestern while acting as host, is not a com- petitor. This year's preliminary contests will be held on the afternoons of April 21 and 22 and the finals on the eve- ning of April 23--all in Annie May Swift hall. For the entertainment of the visitors, Northwestern School of Speech will present three one-act plays during the tournament. These pre- sentations are under the direction of Prof. Vance Morton of the School of Speech who is now instructing the participants. Dean Ralph Dennis is promoting the competition itself.
