XVI, NO. 6 WINNETKA, ILLINOIS, APRIL 16, 1927 PRICE FIVE CENTS START VILLAGE-WIDE CLEAN-UP NEXT WEEK Period Between April 18 and May 13 Designated as Renovation Month Village "house-cleaning" season in Winnetka will formally open next week, the period from April 18 to May 13 having been designated by Win- netka officials as "Clean-up Month." During this time the Village organiza- tion will haul away, free of charge, all rubbish placed in containers on the park-ways. It is urged that all resi- dents co-operate in cleaning up va- cant lots, the owners of which do not live in Winnetka. The regular rubbish service ren- dered by the village throughout the vear is limited to ordinary household rubbish, such as tin cans, bottles, etc. During the "Clean-up Month," how- ever, the Village will haul away rub- bish of any description, excepting material from building remodeling jobs, brush, leaves, grass cuttings and articles too bulky or heavy for easy handling. The schedule of collecting follows. You are requested to preserve this schedule and please remember that vour accumulation must be in contain- ers on the parkway in front of your property on the morning of the days specified below: East of Tracks April 18 and May 2--South limits to Orchard lane. April 19 and May 3--Orchard lane to Elm street. April 20 and May 4--Elm street to Tower road, except Foxdale avenue and Lincoln avenue from Tower road to Humboldt avenue. April 21 and May 5--Tower road to north limits, including Foxdale ave- nue and Lincoln avenue from Tower road to Humboldt avenue. West of Tracks April 22 and May 6--Willow road to south limits. April 25 and May 9--Willow road to Cherry street. April 26 and May 10--Cherry street to Elm street. April 27 and May 11--Elm street to - Pine street, including Blackthorne road, Walden road and Center street. POSTPONE PLAY DATE ; Players of the Winnetka Commun- ity Drama club will present "Grumpy" Wednesday and Thursday, May 4 and 5, instead of April 13 and 14, the dates announced on the players' tickets. The cast will be announced next week. ON THE MEND B. W. Blow, Winnetka excavating contractor, is reported considerably improved in health at Tucson, Ariz., where he has been spending the win- ter. Mr. Blow has been in ill health for about a year, - Contract Let for Construction of Winnetka Memorial Trustees of the Winnetka Memorial announce that the general contract for its construction on the village green was let on April 13, and work will be begun at once. It is hoped that the laying of the cornerstone can take place on Decora- tion day, and the dedication on Armis- tice day. The trustees will appreciate it if those who have subscribed and have not yet sent in their contributions will do so at once, now that the work is actually under way. It should be a source of satisfaction to every citizen, both on account of the beauty of the design and the fact that the sacrifice of our gold star men will at last be fittingly recorded. Three Cars Crash on Church Rd.; Driver of One Is in Hospital Louis Harpig, of Niles Center, driver of a Ford truck owned by the French Laundry, of Evanston, was removed to the Evanston hospital Wednesday evening suffering from a broken rib, a cut on the face and severe injury to his knee, as the result of a three car accident, at Church and Hill roads, Winnetka. The accident occurred at 9:30. Harpig was driving south when he col- lided with a Buick sedan, in charge of William Carter, colored, of 2102 Hebron avenue, Zion City, and which was parked in front of No. 142 Church road. The third car in the wreck was also a Ford truck driven north by Eli Kra- jacic, of 946 Elm street, Winnetka, who was passing at the time of the crash. The Harpig truck tipped over on the Krajacic truck, damaging the left front fender and steering rod of the latter. Krajacic escaped injury. The rear fender of the Buick car was torn off and the axle and spring, break rod and left rear tire were also damaged. Sergeant Ed Cummings and Officer Rhys Fuidge, of the Winnetka police department, reported the accident. "Cash and Carry" to Hold Food Sale on Wednesday "Cash and Carry" will have their last home-cooked food sale for this season Wednesday, April 20, at Com- munity house, with a large variety of tempting dishes, such as baked beans, pies, rolls, breads, cookies, doughnuts, cakes, salads, nuts, candies, etc. All are made by their best cooks. They hope to close with a large. nest egg for their quota for the building fund for the new Congregational church. The committee wishes to heartily thank everyone for their whole-heart- ed co-operation and support of the new venture. They will carry on next winter with the opening of the Wom- en's society meetings. Anyone not able to come to the sale but wishing to buy, is asked to call Winnetka 388 before 9:30, or the Community House. Arrangements will be made for de- livery of the order. ENTERTAINS CAPTAINS Mrs. Hyman Wilson to Give Lunch- eon for Women Who Served as Precinct Chairmen Mrs. Hyman Wilson will entertain at luncheon on Wednesday, April 20 for the block captains who served under her as precinct chairmmen of the Winnetka League of Women Vot- ers, of the eleventh district. This is who is to be the new precinct chair- in honor of Mrs. Herbert Headman, man. Mrs. John N. VanderVries, president of the local league, will also be one of the guests. The following officers were elected for the coming year at the annual meeting held Monday, April 11: Mrs. John VanderVries, president; Mrs. A. Montague Ferry, first vice-president; Mrs. George E. Frazer, second vice- president; Mrs. John R. Montgomery, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Bligh Grasett, recording secretary; Mrs. Hyman Raclin, treasurer; and precinct chairmen: Mrs. Joesph R. Graff, fourth; Mrs. George L. Frie- stedt, fifth; Mrs. I. M. Portis, sixth; Mrs. Howard Shaw, seventh; Miss Caroline Eckstrom, eighth; Mrs. John Hamilton, ninth; Mrs. Frances Lack- ner, tenth; Mrs. Herbert Headman, eleventh; Mrs. William G. Kelley, ig and Mrs. J. D. Wigglesworth, 25th. At this meeting, Mrs. William Gold Hibbard, national director of the fourth region, talked about the na- tional league. Mrs. VanderVries gave a splendid annual message. A sum- mary of the year's work was put at each place, and several high points were brought out. The child welfare committee, of which Mrs. Charles Strong is chairman, had charge of the program. Miss Anne Davis, of the vocational guidance department of the Chicago public schools, gave a most interesting and detailed talk. Miss Harrison spoke about the splendid material for study of the government, furnished by the state and national leagues, and suggested that small groups be started this summer to make use of this material. Winnetkans on Training Trip With Baseball Team Two Winnetka athletes left last week on the spring training trip of the Northwestern baseball team. "Russ" Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith of 804 Oak street, plays third base, while "Bill" Carey, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Carey of 833 Oak street, is catcher. Both boys learned baseball on Skokie Playfield. The spring trip includes games with Cum- berland university, Tenn., Carson New- man college, Tenn., and the univer- sities of Mississippi and St. Louis. HOLDS TWO TANK RECORDS Hal Hudson is spending the Easter vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry N. Hudson, 58 Warwick road. Hal now holds two tank records at Notre Dame, the 440 and the 220 yard swim, and is said to have very bright prospects for further honors the coming season. T. J. LYNCH ELECTED AS HEAD OF C. OF C. E. Ashley Gerhardt. The Winnetka Chamber of Com- merce elected officers for the ensuing D.|year Monday evening, added four new members to its roll and transacted a volume of business, all with an en- thusiasm indicating the advent of the best year in its history. Thomas J. Lynch was honored with the presidency of the Chamber for the ensuing year, who, together with his associate officers will be formally inducted into office on the evening of May 9, the date of the annual meet- ing and dinner. The president and members of the village board will be invited to this meeting, as will the of- ficers of the Chambers of Commerce of Wilmette, Glencoe and Highland Park. The ten new directors elected Mon- day evening were, Robert Doepel, B. G. Eberle, Rev. E. Ashley Gerhardt, Sanborn Hale, Harold Hill, Vic Kil- lian, Henry Klauke, T. J. Lynch, W. T. Wersted and E. L. Weinstock, from whom the directors chose the foregoing officers. The four new members admitted were Joseph Braun, postmaster; Le- land G. Vincent, builder; Winnetka Landscape Co. and the North Shore Pharmacy. Action on the matter of purchasing suits *for the Winnetka baseball team which was brought up at a former meeting and referred to a committee comprising Herb Paulson, Harry Rob- erts and John Brady, was postponed until the next meeting. The committee reported the suits would cost $15.85 each, and that twelve suits would be necessary. Two Automobiles Crash at Street Intersection Two automobiles, both being driven by women, collided at North avenue and Green Bay road, Wednesday, one of the cars being shunted over against the North Shore station. 8. M. Spieg- el's Chrysler, being driven by his daughter, Miss Spiegel, of 410 Sheri- dan road, Winnetka was west bound on North avenue and at Green Bay. road collided with a. Nash car being driven by Mrs. Frank F. Northway, of 6224 North Irving avenue, Chicago. Neither driver was injured, but the Chrysler car was considerably dam- aged.
