get nfl al April 23, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Arts Club, Chicago, Follows Rule Offered by Antonin Sterba The experiment tried at the Orring- ton hotel art galleries just before the holidays, when the exhibit of Chicago artists' paintings were hung to rule suggested by Antonin Sterba, Evans- ton artist, has been adopted and fol- lowed in the current show at the Ars club, Chicago. This rule is that exhibited canvasses should conform in size to a certain degree, making impossible the frequent jarring notes of little pictures or over- whelmingly big ones. The approxi- mate measurement is 28 inches in one direction. As a result of its application in the Evanston show, the wall ar- rangements were worked out harmon- iously and to advantage. There were no small canvasses to be obscured. Thomas FE. Tallmadge has a show- ing of specimens of engraving in this downtown exhibit, A. H. Ullrich has a sketch, and a majority of the other artists of Chicago and vicinity who have exhibited at Evanston shows, have entered canvasses. STERBA EXHIBITS Mr. Sterba is represented in the ex- hibition of paintings by men painters of Illinois which opened recently at the Illinois Women's Athletic club. Other north shore artists also have showings there. LECTURE ON ART Two Evanston artist teachers, the Misses Anna Helga Hong and Ethel || Louise Coe, are on the current pro- gram of the Fullerton hall lectures at the Art Institute, Chicago. Miss Hong, a professor of art at Northwestern uni- versity, talked on "Color in the Home," Monday. Next Monday Miss Coe will discuss "The English Home." Sees Chicago as Center of Industrial "Gravity" "Northern Illinois may well be de- scribed as the country's 'center of gravity' in respect to industrial activi- ties," said John G. Learned, vice-presi- dent of the Public Service company of Northern Illinois, in addressing the Industrial Development conference held in Waukegan last week in con- nection with the fifth district confer- ence of the Illinois Chamber of Com- merce. "New industries," continued Mr. Learned, "constantly are on the look- out for advantageous locations. There is no section of the country which has more to offer in the way of both natural facilities and those which have been developed than the territory north, west and south of Chicago." After mentioning many of the fac- tors which must be born in mind by communities in their efforts to obtain new industries, Mr. Learned devoted several minutes to emphasizing the importance of aiding in the develop- ment and expansion of industries al- ready established. "We all recognize the importance," he said, "of doing our utmost to at- tract new manufacturing plants to the Northern Illinois territory. We must exercise care, however, that--in our zeal for the new--we do not neglect the old." Frank W.
