Bert Blow's Men Made Dirt Fly at Theater When the "dirt began to fly" on the site where there has since risen the new Teatro del Lago, it was a north shore firm that sent its men and machinery to the scene to "dig," and in a remarkably short time after the first shovel full of dirt was removed, the job was completed--2,343 cubic yards of earth had been removed. This work was done by B. W. Blow, of 660 Center street, Winnetka, who, in ad- dition to his contracting for excavating work, also deals in building materials. Mr. Blow supplied the contractor the sand, gravel and cinders for the spacious driveways leading to Teatro del Lago from both Sheridan road and Tenth street and also for the construc- tion of the space for parking automo- biles. According to this firm, thirty- five carloads of these materials were used for the parking space alone, and thirty carloads for the driveways, a total of sixty-five cars. Select Kimball Organ for Music at New Theater The organ in Teatro del Lago was built and installed by the W. W. Kimball company of Chicago. This instrument was selected by the management, after having many years satisfactory experience with Kimball organs. This instrument, which will supply the musical part of the enter- tainment offered the patrons of the theater, is the latest development of the Orchestral organ. It contains the tones of a symphony orchestra in ad- dition to those of an organ and the registration was especially designed to suit the acoustics of the theater. In addition to its use as a perfect ac- companiment to the silent drama, it has a voice of its own as a solo instru- ment, and will be heard in this use as one of the features of the entertain- ment. Balustrades Are Unique Feature of Theater Interior On each of the side walls of the theater auditorium have been built in several Spanish canopy balustrades. Built of architectural wrought iron, and surmounted by striped canopies, they form practically the only break in the wall surface and add a decided artistic touch to the simple Spanish design of the theater interior. The iron work in itself is an unusu- ally beautiful piece of workmanship. In twisted and spiral groups, the vari- ous parts of the rail and the canopy supports break the monotony of an ordinary balustrade and make of each a delicate piece of artistry. The balustrades were built by the Seymour Architectural Iron company, 1635 Fulton street, Chicago, as were also the stair-cases and the rails sur- rounding the orchestra pit. The Sey- mour company has done the iron work in several Chicago buildings, among them being the addition to the Illinois Central hospital. Mission Area Provides Tiling for New Theater The roof tile and tile panels used in the wall decorations and paneling of Teatro del Lago were brought from old Mexico and California. The ma- terial used in the roofing is the regular mission tile utilized in the construction of buildings in Mexico, Spain and the modified Spanish buildings in Califor- nia. The tile panels are excellent ex- amples of the artistry of the work done by the Mexican tile-makers and play an important part in the beauti- ful but simple decorations of the theater.
