May 7, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 7 WINNETKANS TO HONOR WAR DEAD ON MAY 28 American Legion Making Prepar- ations for Annual Poppy Sale to Aid Disabled Veterans Three weeks from today, or Satur- day, May 28, will be Day," when, in memory of those who sleep in Flanders Field, the beautiful cus- tom of wearing the bright red poppy will be observed, and the proceeds from the sale of these flowers in this annual observance will add more cheer "Poppy and comfort to disabled and needy comrades of those who gave their lives. Winnetka Post No. 10, American Le- gion, is making preparation for the annual observance and Poppy sale in this village. A large committee of women is now being organized for the sale of Poppies, the proceeds from which will go to the Legion service and welfare department. The Poppies, purchased through the American Legion, are made by dis- abled soldiers and distributed through the organization to the various posts throughout the land, in turn to be sold to a generous public, "Oh you who sleep in Flanders Fields Sleep sweet--to rise anew; We caught the Torch you threw, And holding high, we keep the Faith With all who died "We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor red; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a luster to the red Of the flowers that bloom above the dead In Flanders Fields! "And now the Torch and Poppy red We wear in honor of our Dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We've learned the lesson that ye taught In Flanders Fields!" Fach succeeding year witnesses an increase in interest manifest in Poppy Day, and plans for its observance this year, in Winnetka, are on a much larger scale than has yet been under- taken by the local post. The idea of wearing the Poppy in memory of all who died in the World War was presented to the American Legion by one, who, from all informa- tion obtainable, was the first in Amer- ica to thus wear the poppy--Miss Moina Michael, of Athens, Georgia. Miss Michael also wrote the fore- going verse in dedication of this beau- tiful custom. Public Invited to View N. S. Art League Exhibit The North Shore Art league ex- hibit, in Community House, is still open and the public is invited to come espe cially between the hours from 2:30 to 6 Sunday afternoon.
