May 7, 1927 WINNETKA TALK "Flawless" Artist "Sophie Braslau is flawless." This is the testimonial of Lena Falk Gjertsen, music critic for the San Diego Tri- bune who wrote the above in praise of the singer following a concert at which she appeared. The north shore will have occa- sion to verify this judgment when Miss Braslau sings the two arias which -are an important part of the program of the Evanston Music fes- tival to be presented Saturday after- noon, May 28. She is booked to appear on the an- nual Saturday afternoon children's program--one of the festival's out- standing occasions. The children's chorus of 1,500 voices will be heard in | . | two groups of children's songs and | | they will sing the cantata, "Old Johnny Appleseed" by Harvey B. Gaul. The Chicago Civic orchestra, directed by Frederick Stock, will play Rossini's "Overture to William Tell," Strauss' "Tales from the Vienna Woods," the | suite from the ballet, "Sleeping Beauty" by Tschaikowsky, a waltz movement by Volkmann and a polonaise from a serenade by Beethoven whose music, marking the centennial of his passing, will be made important all throughout the festival. Miss Braslau has been acclaimed "the Schumann-Heink of the younger generation, with an art like that of Chaliapin, Ruffo, Bori and Pavlowa." The late James G. Huneker summed up her voice with just two words, "gorgeous contralto." Of it a Berlin critic said: "It is a phenomenal con- tralto. There are few voices like it in the world. It is a genuine contralto with a seemingly unending upper regis- ter. The singer is a rare type. In her interpretations her intelligence is equalled by her emotions. Her per- sonality is very striking. She is, in fact, an amazing creature." I ' John Tomlinson Named Professor of Philosophy John Tomlinson son of Mr. and Mrs. George H.
