May 28, 1927 WINNETKA TALK NEW TRIER DEBATERS VANQUISH CHAMPIONS Township High "Sched Teams Win Decisions Over Cleveland and Urbana Orators In the past two weeks the New Trier High school debating teams have defeated one of the strongest high school teams in the country, that of Cleveland Heights High school, and one of the good Illinois teams, the Urbana High school. The question for debate in both cases was: "Resolved: that the U. S. should grant the Phlippine Islands their immediate independence." The Cleveland school is a member of the Erie Debating league in which it won the undisputed championship this year, proving itself the strongest team in northern Ohio. Each year Cleveland wins that championship the school rewards the team by giving it a trip to meet a representative team from another state, so it happened that this year arrangements were made for the New Trier debate. The Cleveland principal, in a letter to Principal Frederick E. Clerk of New Trier, declared that he considered the winning of this debate the greatest debating honor that could come to a high school in the Middle West. Professor Berholziemer, the North- western debate coach, judged the de- bate. In explanation of his decision he said of the six principal points he considered New Trier was the best in five while Cleveland had the edge in one. He spoke very highly of the quality of the debate, saying it was unusually good for high schools and as good as some collge debates. Mr. Clerk acted as chairman, Cleveland sent an affirmative team which met the New Trier team, com- posed of Rollin Simonds, the leader, and John Erickson and Seymour Burge. In the Urbana debate New Trier sent her affirmative team composed of Henry Heineman, the leader, Victor Dauber and Frank Gilchrist to Urbana where they won the three judges' unanimous decision. At the same time New Trier's nega- tive team of Rollin Simonds, the lead- er, Karl Yost and Seymour Burge de- feated the Urbana affirmative team at New Trier. The one-man judge sys- tem was used for this debate, and Mr. Hutchens presided. MacLean Is Coach In all the debates the New Trier teams, coached by C. E. MacLean, showed a thorough knowledge of the subject. They based most of their argument on very practical reasoning.
