>, » ~~ July 2, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 52 Colleges Plan Realty Courses in Next School Year When the first national conference to outline an educational preparation for the vocation of real estate was called, at Madison, Wis., in April of 1923, courses in real estate or in land economics were unknown in all but three or four institutions of learning in the United States. In September of this year fifty-two universities and col- leges will be offering one or more of these courses, according to a tabula- tion which has just been issued by the National Association of Real Estate boards. The tabulation was made by the association's department of educa- tion and research through direct cor- respondence with deans of the depart- ments of commerce and corresponding administrative officials of the colleges and universities. Paralleling the introduction of land economics and real estate into the cur- riculi of colleges and universities, courses in these subjects have come to take a prominent place also in the adult education movement, according to a further tabulation made by the associa- tion from special reports by its member boards. Since last September 89 local real es- tate boards in cities throughout the United States conducted courses in real estate either under their own aus- pices or in co-operation with Y. M. C. A. schools, university extension divi- sions, or similar institutions: 117 courses were given, seventy-six of them being general courses in real es- tate business fundamentals. Eleven of them were special courses in real estate appraisal methods; eight were courses in real estate law; six were courses in the technique of real estate convey- ancing; six were courses in specialized real estate selling methods; three were Richard T. Ely. As director of the Institute for Research in Land Economics and Public Utilities, Director Ely has tak- en a leading part in studying the American housing situation and is one of the sponsors for the famous "Sun- nyside" metropolitan community in New York. Some of the features of the new course will be based upon in- vestigations now being made in Europe by Coleman Woodbury, a Northwestern alumnus, who recently won a Rhodes scholarship. Miss Lois Scharrf Opens Kindergarten Sessions Miss Lois Scharrf of 509 Cherry street, who is a graduate of the Na- tional Kindergarten and Elementary college, opened a kindergarten on July I. The school is in session every morning except Saturday from 9 to 11:30 o'clock and will continue for six weeks. Miss Scharrf can accommo- date thirty pupils for the entire time or will make arrangements for daily pupils, she explains.
