= July 2, 1927 WINNETKA TALK All South Dakota Stirred by Local Mawn's Thru Trip Trains may come and trains may go, but this particular train went right along, leaving James Brooks stranded in Milbank, South Dakota. Now any- one who's ever been in Milbank knows that it's no town to become stranded in; especially on a hot June day. More- over, Mr. Brooks was due back at the Winnetka Trust and Savings bank and a mental review of the calendar pointed clearly to a decided lack of time to meditate upotd any subject for any great period. And last but far from least, a generous part of Mr. Brooks' wardrobe was traveling eastward just as fast as the train could take it be- tween stops. For some reason or other--though he searched the town from end to end-- not an airplane could be located. The supply in Milbank was rather short that day, the natives assured him; but their automobiles could make just as good time on the road as anybody elses' automobiles. - Now Mr. Brooks was not in a position to quibble over; the means of transportation as long as there was a possibility of overtaking a chartered seat in a rapidly disappear- ing train. Mr. Brooks hired a car. It took him | outside of the city and stopped. Mr. Brooks chine. along a South Dakota --and likewise a fourth. At last, throughly disgusted with any and all means of transportation--absent or otherwise--Mr. Brooks descended upon the fifth garage owner and demanded a car that would run beyond the vil- lage limits without stopping and then keep on running. And still in South Dakota, the awe- stricken housewives and farm hands are telling their wide-eyed children of the desperate phantom who pursued a limited train for 110 miles between Mil- bank and Aberdeen where at last he resumed the varnished coaches and his neglected wardrobe. Mr. Brooks, at the time of his ad- venture, was returning from a visit with his sister, Mrs. Helen B. Rottle of Seattle, Washington, and a trip to Vancouver, Banff and Lake Louise.
