i i | No a ---- RH July 9, 1927 WINNETKA TALK STATE LAW TO AID FIGHT ON SKEETER Gorgas Institute to Be Scene of Mosquito War Conference Friday, July 15 Sixty-two mosquito fighting or- ganizations, including those in north shore villages, have been summoned to participate in a general mosquito abatement conference to be held at the Gorgas Memorial institute in Chi- cago Friday, July 15. State, county, sanitary district, city, village, and park districts are included among the units which will be represented at the discussions. It is estimated by Arthur Stringer, associate director of Gorgas institute in charge of mosquito abatement plans, that an army of about 25,000 individuals are engaged, to a greater or less degree, in active elimination work at this time throughout the country. The efforts of this army con- stitute about all that is to be done with the situation this vear. While no overwhelming victory may be looked for, Mr. Stringer says, the basic structure for a thorough and successful campaign in 1928 is being built in advance and at the same time having some effect in keeping down to subnormal the prevalence of the pests this year. Suggests Organization "Suggestions as to the organization of mosquito control districts under the new Huebsch law, enacted by the state legislature last month," Mr. Stringer said, "include the views that all of Cook county should be made a unit of control; that districts should be formed in each of the north, west and southwest sections, and also one con- sisting of the city of Chicago; and that a single district should be formed of all the territory in Cook county outside the corporate limits of Chicago. "An expression by the mosquito conference of a preference concerning the composition of the unit, after thorough discussion, is the object of the meeting. Show Way to Nation "In our opinion the Chicago area now has an opportunity, through the instrumentality of the new law, to take a position as leader in this na- tion in the matter of mosquito con- trol. When all machinery is set in motion the mosquito abatement should be accomplished as quickly and as completely as it was under military control in Havana or the Panama zone. When the Gorgas plan is ap- plied in the area there will be no more mosquitoes." In the meantime the work in the local suburban units is being encour- aged by Gorgas institute for the pur- pose of offering as much public re- lief this year as possible. Goodwin to Conduct Sunday Congregational Services Rev. Thomas A. Goodwin will con- duct the services at the Winnetka Congregational church Sunday. A junior service will be held immediately preceding the regular morning wor- ship and Mr. Goodwin will speak to Circle Gives Picnic for Settlement Group Thirty-six children from the Chicago Commons, a settlement house in Chi- cago, were guests of the West Elm street circle of the Winnetka Congre- gational church at a picnic last Wed- nesday. Upon their arrival in Win- netka, the children were furnished with bathing suits at Community House and taken to the lake shore for a swim. Luncheon was served at the Community House and then the chil- dren were taken in cars about the Vil- lage. This was followed by another dip in the lake, immediately preced- ing the trip home. Mrs. Douglas Flood, 132 Kenilworth avenue, left this week for Charlevoix, Mich., where she will be the guest of her brother's family, the Bowes, in their summer cottage.
