Pretzel The second of the children's after- noons at Ravinia park, which was on Thursday, July 7, was just about ideal in every way. The weather was per- fect, the orchestra program one that sent the children away humming snatches of famous compositions, and the second half of the program was composed of picturesque dances by the Ravinia Opera Ballet, a real treat. The only "but" for the afternoon was that there weren't nearly enough seats to go around!! Many children and grown folk who didn't care for the doubtful comfort of standing were obliged to re- turn home. Others draped themselves around the railings and refused to let the mere absence of comfort keep them from enjoying the privilege of hearing the Chicago Symphony or- chestra under the direction of Eric DelLamarter. Let those who sniff at these Thursday afternoons attend one and realize the enthusiasm of the children, their keen attention and spontaneous applause. "William Tell" Overture .. Rossini's overture from "William Tell" opened the program, followed by "Grand Pas des Fiancees," by Glazou- now, both of which were immensely enjoyed, if applause means anything. Several hundred funny bones were tickled with Moussorgsky's gay "Ballet of the Chickens in Their Shells." Some Creole dances came next, and then a dancer in colorful Russian costume gave a Russian folk dance. A demure miss in pink fluff followed with a waltz, and last came the Spanish dancers in the graceful abandon of the "Jota" rom "La Vida Breve." Next week Thursday the orchestra is offering works by four of the great composers, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Haydn. The children of the Oak Park playgrounds will present their playground band, which has a person- nel of forty-six boys, and a panto- mime of the awakening of a modern girl and boy to fancy and beauty.
