July 23, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 43 "LOHENGRIN" IS NEXT FEATURE AT RAVINIA Popular German Opera to be Sung Thursday, July 28; Reth- berg and Johnson Stars Another language will be heard at Ravinia during the week beginning Sunday, July 24, with the presentation on Thursday night of Richard Wag- ner's great music drama, "Lohengrin." This German work has in seasons past been an outstanding favorite with all Ravinia patrons, and the fact that louis Eckstein has Elisabeth Rethberg and Edward Johnson available for its two leading roles gives assurance it will receive the same masterful presen- tation which has distinguished it in the past. Desire Defrere will sing the role of Telramund for the first time on any stage. The coming week is replete in operatic treats of the first order. In addition . to "Lohengrin" one finds among the presentations which are to be given for the first time this season that merry old comic grand opera, "The Barber of Seville," and Halevy's in- triguing work, "La Juive." The week will begin on Sunday af- ternoon, July 24, with a concert by | the Chicago Symphony orchestra, un- der the direction of Eric Del.amarter. In addition to the program of ensemble numbers which Mr. Del.amarter has ar- ranged, Alfred Wallenstein, cellist, will be heard in a solo group. "Barber of Seville" "The Barber of Seville" is scheduled for Sunday night, at.which. time Tina Paggi will appear as Rosina. Mario Chamlee is to sing the part of Al- maviva, and Mario Basiola will have the title role. Leon Rothier is cast as Don Basilio, and Vittorio Trevisan will have the part of Doctor Bartolo. The regular concert will be given on Monday night, July 25, by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direc- tion of Eric Del.amarter. Tina Paggi, soprano, is the soloist chosen from the ranks of the opera coterie and will present a group of well known arias and songs. Alfred Wallenstein, cellist, will also appear as a soloist. All seats are free for these concerts, the general admission at the gate covering every- thing. One of the season's most outstanding works is scheduled for Tuesday night, July 26, when "La Juive" will be pre- sented. Elizabeth Rethberg will be heard in the title role of this opera. The part of Laazer will be sung by Martinelli. Leon Rothier will be heard as Cardinal Brogni. Florence Mac- beth will be cast as the Princess. Jose Mojica is to be given the part of Prince Leopold. Others in the cast are Desire Defrere, Louis D'Angelo and Paolo Ananian. Louis Hasselmans will conduct. "Mignon" "Mignon," Ambroise Thomas' melo- dious opera, which was restored to the Ravinia repertoire last week, proved to be so gratifying to the record audience that heard it that an early repeat of this work has become imperative.
