mn Rp Tih August 13, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 15 Niles Center Experiences Remarkable Building Gain Niles Center played a stellar role in July building construction, making a gain over July of last year of 563 percent. Whiting followed a close second with a gain of 518 percent. Of the twenty-three Chicago suburbs making official reports, the other towns making gains included Evans- ton, Glencoe, Glen Ellyn, Joliet, Har- vey, Des Plaines and Waukegan, ac- cording to S. W. Straus and company who compile statistics on more than 500 leading cities and towns of the country. Evanston eclipsed its traditional rival Oak Park by making a 4 percent gain in July over the same month last year. In comparison with June this year, however, Evanston sustained a loss of 65 per cent. Oak Park had a loss of 71 percent in comparison with June of this year and a loss of 20 percent in comparison with July last year. The drop 'in building volume so marked over the country generally is beginning to be felt in the suburbs that have so far defied all tendencies to show losses consistently. The comparative figures for July 1926 and 1927 were as follows: 'July 1927 July 1926 AUrOPR: "+ vans + "ava $ 251,735 §$ 479,564 Berwyn ....c. nes 343,400 1,027,700 Blue Island ...... 101,870 134,755 Chicago Heights 79,530 171,925 Clearer"... 75s. 318,056 659,050 Pes Plaines ...... 39,425 38,420 Bvanston ........ 624,550 595,200 Glencoe .:..i....s... 139,850 100,025 Gien Ellyn °...... 153,800 147,000 Harvey '......:.:> 155,518 77,404 Highland Park ... 185,560 232,883 Johel "t. . . ..vieniv 410,000 335,222 1.8...
