~¢ v "> ey SIRE Ny Ai ati-- A 4 -- v) August 13, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Hanley Introduces Warner Grid Scheme for Purple Eleven ('foach Dick Hanley, Northwestern university's new football mentor, will| introduce to the Big Ten this fall an) entirely new system of football. The] former Haskell Indian mentor plans to] establish at Northwestern the famous | Warner system which has been used by Pop Warner and his grid proteges with unusual success wherever tried. Coach Hanley who was brought up on the Warner system during his col- lege career at Washington state and later used it with such brilliant success at Haskell is confident that his teams at Northwestern will adopt the new type of play with similar success. Dur- ing the spring training period, Coach Hanley and his brother Pat began tu- toring the Purple players in the new style of football and it "took" immedi- ately with the large squad of varsity candidates. The huddle system is not used by Coach Hanley. The quarterback calls out his signals rather than merely giv- ine the number of the play as is the vogue on many teams today. A number of other new features will be noticed by the fans who see the Wildcats in action this fall. While it is usually a difficult task to teach a squad of play- ers a new system in one season, Coach Hanlev feels certain that the Purple candidates will be able to grasp the Warner system rapidly. Coach Hanley expects to depend largely upon last year's varsity material for his squad this fall. While the fresh- man squad will produce a few prom- ising candidates for a varsity berth the new men as a whole are not ex- pected to give much aid. Few sopho- mores will be able to step into a reg- ular job and for this reason Coach Hanley expects difficulty in filling a few positions, principally, ends and cen- ters. Surmounting these difficulties the new coach faces one of the hardest sched- ules in the conference. Following the opening tilt with South Dakota the Purple will be called upon to meet the strong Utah eleven and then on the following Saturday bumps up against Ohio at Columbus for the conference onener. Then comes the hop back to Evanston to meet Illinois on the fol- lowing week-end. Then without any respite comes the tough Missouri eleven to be followed by Indiana, Pur- due and Iowa.
