September 3, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 5 Ravinia Slates Double Bill for Closing Program An afternoon of American Music will be given at Ravinia on Sunday after- noon, September 4th, this ending the concert series for the current season. A program has been arranged for the Chi- cago Symphony orchestra by Eric De- Lamarter, conductor, in which the works of several of the most represen- tative American composers will be fea- tured. Miss Mary Lewis, American so- prano, will appear as a soloist on this occasion, singing a group of songs dear to the hearts of all English speaking people. Alfred Wallenstein, cellist, and Walter Hancock, violinist, will likewise be heard in solo numbers. Sunday night, September 4th, Char- pentier's celebrated opera "Louise" will be given, with Yvonne Gall again in the title role, in which she has already won the acclaim of all Ravinia patrons. Ed- ward Johnson will be opposite her as Julien, while Leon Rothier will be the Father, and Julia Claussen, the Mother. Others in the cast are Margery Max- well, Gladys Swarthout, Philine Falco, Jose Mojica, Louis D'Angelo and Ruth Page. Louis Hasselmans will conduct. The season will end on Monday night, September 5, with the dazz- ling of world stars in the _principal roles. In "Pagliacci," Lucrezia Bori is to be heard as Nedda, with Giovanni Martinelli opposite her as Canio, and Guiseppe Danise in the role of Tonio. George Cehanovsky will be Silvio, and Giordano Paltrinieri, Beppe. Elizabeth Rethberg will sing Santuzza in "Caval- leria Rusticana," with Mario Chamlee as Turriddu. Gladys Swarthout is to be heard as Lola, and Desire Defrere, Alfie. Anna Correnti is cast as Mama Lucia. Gennaro Papi will conduct both operas. Mrs. Walter Fisher of Winnetka, who is.Ruth Page, premiere danseuse of the Bohm ballet, and also of the Ravinia Opera, was leader of the dancers for the fifth of a series of special performances for patients in the Chicago State hospital Thursday. Miss Pence will go to Waukegan for four days as the guest of the American Legion. She will be furnished with a car, a chauffeur, and a chaperon. A suite at the Hotel Clayton will also be at her disposal. Mss Pence, who was entered from Bellevue, Ky., will be a junior at Deerfield this year. She is the daugh- ter of Edward Pence, who still resides in Kentucky. Among the affairs given for Mme. Julia Claussen of the Ravinia Opera company was the dinner Monday eve- ning given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Hayes of 483 Sheridan road. The affair was given not only for Madame Claussen but also in honor of Charles Peterson's birthday. Motion pictures were made of the party. Music and dancing followed the dinner. VISIT INDIAN TRIBES Cecil J. Clark and his niece, Miss F. Beryl Speck, formerly of Hubbard Woods, and now residents of Evans- ton, have returned from a three weeks' trip into the Tusayan country. They outfitted at the Grand Canyon of Ari- zona and camped through the Hopi and Navajo Indian reservations, visiting the pueblos of Moenkopi, Hotevilla, Orai- biand, and Walfi. Arriving at the first mesa the day before the Snake dance they saw this most gruesome of all ceremonies, and the rites preceding it.
