September 10, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 11 Local Gardeners Win Awards in Garden Contests Pride in their gardens may bring honors and an award of one thousand dollars to either a Wilmette or a Win- netka resident, in addition to other cash prizes which already have been awarded in the "Beautiful Garden" competition conducted by the Chicago Tribune. These residents are women, Mrs. Phoebe A. Hurlbut of 715 Green- leaf avenue, Wilmette and Mrs. Ran- dolph Buck of 1290 Scott street, Win- netka. Both Mrs. Hurlbut and Mrs. Buck were entrants ir. section one of the con- test. Mrs. Buck was the winner in the sectional contest for early gardens and received $100 when the judging in this section was completed. And it is worthy of note here that Mrs. Buck did not cease in her efforts to maintain a beau- tiful garden later in the season for she managed to take down third prize in the late garden competition, which gave her additional $50 award. Mrs. Hurlbut was the winner of the late garden prize of $100, which means she is eligible to compete for the grand prize of $1,000, the winner of which will be announced next Sunday. Other North Shore residents had a prominent part in the contest, among these being Mrs. Edward J. Phelps, of 328 Leicester road, Kenilworth, who took second place for late gardens and was awarded $75, E. H. Johnson of 127 Church street, Winnetka, who received $25, and Mrs. J. E. Worthan of 314 Greenleaf avenue, Wilmette who took down $10. In the final reckoning for the big prize of $1,000, those eligible include the early garden winners and the late gar- den winners in the six sections. This means that a total of twelve have a chance for the big award. Four of those who were adjudged ---- winners in the early garden contest alsq came through with flying colors and were awarded hundred dollar prizes for their late gardens. The contest which has resulted in many fine gardens throughout north shore has been interesting, with kcen rivalry apparent. Bankers, jani- tors, doorkeepers, druggists, teachers, doctors and engineers, in fact folks in many lines of endeavor competed with many women striving for the prizes. Mr. and Mrs. John Macleish and their daughter, Miss Virginia, of 535 Ash street, are in New York, and will be home the early part of next week after a four months' tour in Europe. Miss Virginia will return to her classes at Smith college in company with the Misses Louise Fentress and Elizabeth Parker of Winnetka and Alice Thomas of Glencoe, all of whom attend Smith. ---- Mrs. Donald Beck of 306 Forest avenue was hostess at dinner and bridge Wednesday evening in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Galloway of 940 Private road, who have recently moved to Winnetka from Evanston.
