CT -- PY PHO SEI AY September 10, 1927 WINNETKA TALK : 43 Chess Club The North Shore Chess club was founded three years ago. Stanley Rich proposed to some chess players in the fall of 1924 that they form a chess club in Winnetka. The response was agreeable so the club was founded and the first meeting was held in the home of John C. Cobb at 615 Elm street, Winnetka. There were about ten present at the first meeting including Stanley Rich, John C. Cobb, H. O. Edmonds, Fred- erick Mason, William Kelley, G. M. McCounell, and Felix Boldenweck. Mr. Rich was honored as founder and secretary at this meeting. Name Changed The club soon grew in numbers and territory and then took the name of North Shore Chess club. Meetings were held twice a month and as thc work grew the secretaryship was passed to John C. Cobb. The ex- penses were borne by Rich and Cobb during the first eighteen months and then the club assessed itself for fur- ther expenses, and this was soon fol- lowed by electing Stanley Rich presi- dent, John C. Cobb, secretary, and Augustus F. Eason, team captain. In the spring of 1927 the Club tour- nament was started and it was won by Captain Eason, with Felix Boldenweck second, and President Rich third. Summer Events During the summer the officers of the club arranged for five activities. And as news of them spread the club again started to grow until the mem- bership has nearly reached fifty. The club is divided into three tourneys as follows: the Progressive tourney with some ten players; the Cheshire tour- ney with some fifteen players, and the Club tourney with some twenty-five players. The club is also entering a team of eight in the Chicago City Chess league this winter. That makes four events. Inter-town Tourney The fifth event is an Inter-town tournament between the various north shore towns. The teams will be com- posed of four men each and it prom- ises to be a very interesting program. This tournament will be in charge of Team Captain Eason who will call the town captains together about the middle of September and arrange de- tails. He expects Allen E. Philbrick will be the Winnetka captain, and Joseph Schumacker the Rogers Park captain. H. L. Beach and John B. Boddie have been very active in getting to- gether a Wilmette team. Dr. Frank C. Dakin and Chas. H. Fischer are as- sembling an Evanston team. Captain H. B. Willis will enter a team from Kenilworth, and Captain R. W. Larke of the Moraine has a very formidable line-up from Highland Park. The club will play at the Tornado Tavern September 8 and 22 in the evening from 8 to 11. John Candler Cobb, Secretary.
