Susiraction in Winnetka Community Evanston Shop Open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Evenings I: House Has Many Degrees TEE @ EB ] Early this week, the Meltzer School ¢ el] for Wind and Fretted Instruments r w opened its Winnetka branch in the ° w Community House. Edward J. Melt- % zer, who will be there regularly State and Jackson--Chicago Orrington and Church-- Evanston o to give instruction on these instru- ments has just returned from New York where he spent the summer studying band arranging and conduct- ing with Oreste Vessella and Pasquale Mondrone, as well as taking master lessons from some of the greatest au- thorities on their respective instru- ments. Mr. Meltzer possesses a splendid preparation to teach these instru- ments for although he teaches a wide range of them, he has gone to the greatest teachers of each to study with them personally and learn the secrets of their art. He first realized the necessity of having a thorough knowledge of each instrument while he was the conductor and teacher of each Northwestern University band and his ambition to do this has taken him from coast to coast, twice to the shores of the Atlantic and as far west as Denver to study with F. N. Innes, the world-famous bandmaster, and to Los Angeles to study with Herbert Clarke, who was for twenty years the cornet soloist of Sousa's band. Northwestern university has con- ferred upon Mr. Meltzer the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts, representing together eight years of college study. His Mus. B. (the first given with a major in any wind instrument), was awarded for his studies on the trumpet with Edward B. Llewellyn, the brilliant first trumpet of the Chicago Symphony orchestra, and his work in theory, harmony and composition with Professors Oldberg, Lutkin, and Beecher. The B. A. de- gree was won "with distinction" and the honor of election to Phi Beta Kappa society. For four years Mr. Meltzer was the conductor of the Northwestern univer- sity band. During his term of service the band's instrumentation was revised and the membership doubled, while under his baton the finest transcrip- tions for concert band were performed. He resigned this position a year ago to teach at Skokie school in Winnetka and founded his own school of music and this year he has been compelled to devote all his time to his own classes as besides the Winnetka branch, he has also studios in Chicago, Evanston and Wilmette. INJURY DELAYS HARRINGTON H. F. Harrington, dean of the Medill school of Journalism, Northwestern university, who was injured in an auto- mobile accident while in Ostend, Bel- gium, this summer has been forced to undergo a second operation on his leg, according to word received at the uni- versity. This will necessitate his stay- ing abroad until late in October or early in November. Mr. and Mrs. Francis King Cooke and their sons, Francis, Jr., and Lau- rence, are leaving for a year's motor- ing in the West, chiefly in California, Washington, and Oregon. They will visit the National parks, including those of Canada. Or Mr. and Mrs. Francis Magoun, who have been visiting Mrs. Magoun's par- ents, the William C. Boydens at 725 Pine street, are leaving this Sunday for their home in Cambridge. THESE NEW SUITS!
