September 24, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Smith Ball Takes Place in Evanston Club on October 5 Dancing in the ballroom for those who prefer it and bridge in the down- stairs rooms for those favoring cards, will supply variety in entertainment on occasion of the annual Smith College club ball to be held at the Evanston Country club, Wednesday evening, Oct. 5. Officers of the club form the execu- tive committee directing the ball; the president, Miss Mary Buchanan, vice- president, Miss Pearl Gridley; secre- tary, Miss Mary Jane Judson. Mrs. Charles G. Bennet has been appointed chairman of the poster committee, Miss Lydia Atwater of the refreshment com- mittee, the Misys Mary Jane and Alice Judson, publicity chairmen. Miss Mary Lois McMullen, ticket chairman, is as- sisted by the following committee: Mrs. John E. Blunt, Jr., Mrs. Scott, Miss Margaret Scott, Miss Barbara Jones, Mrs. Frank Parker Davis, Miss Mary Buchanan, Miss Pearl Gridley, Mrs. W. R. T. Ewen, Jr., Miss Mar- garet McGuire, Mrs. John Knight and Mrs. Clyde Horn of Evanston; Miss Elinor Woodward of Winnetka; Miss Carolyn Schofield of Highland Park; Miss Doris Hill of Glencoe and Miss Catherine Bulkley of Chicago. Assisting on the refreshment committee will be Miss Dorothy Pickard, Miss Barbara and Miss Katherine Jones and Miss Elinor Stevens of Highland Park. Mrs. A. G. Kieson, with her daugh- ter, Frances, of 839 Ash street, and her son, Adolph, of Chicago, returned Sat- urday from a motor trip thorugh Wis- consin, --_--0-- Miss Leila Withers, daughter of the A. L. Withers of 788 Lincoln avenue, has returned to the Masters school, Dobbs-Ferry. Former Winnetka Girl Has Place With Film Magazine Ruth Lieber Biery, a former Win- netka girl and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Lieber of 468 Ridge avenue, has just been made a member | of the staff of Photoplay magazine. She makes her debut in the October | number of the magazine with an ar- | ticle on "Janet's Jonsey." This is based on an interview with Janet Gay- nor, the successful young star of "Sev- enth Heaven," and tells how Janet's stepfather, "Jonsey," dissuaded her from becoming a school teacher and urged her to try her luck in the films. Mrs. Biery, the author of the article, is a graduate of New Trier high school and the University of Illinois. While at New Trier, she was a member of the staff of the high school paper. At the university, she majored in journal- ism and was 'a member of the Daily Illini staff. She was married about eight years ago and moved out west to the Coast. She now lives near Los Angeles and did publicity and news- paper work there before she was ap- pointed to the Photoplay staff. RETURN FROM TRAVELS A number of Evanston and north shore people who were members of the party conducted by Mrs. Edward Hell- mund (Alice Price Bell) have returned after a summer of travel in Europe. J. Dalmar, Miss Jean Dalmar and Miss Alice Creber of Chicago.
