A ----.. 7 -- October 15, 1927 WINNETKA TALK oy Childs to Devote Time to Directing Physical Training In order to devote more time to the administration of New Trier athletic and Physical Education programs, Duke Childs, head of the Department of Physical Education, has relinquish- ed his position as basketball coach and has appointed Clyde Grater, teacher of mathematics and assistant coach, as head coach in this department of New Trier athletics. Excessive work and a need for more time in the arranging and carrying out of plans for the athletic and physical education departments was given by Mr. Childs as the reason for the change. Mr. Childs came to New Trier eigh- teen years ago, after being head coach of basketball at the University of Chi- cago for three years, during which that school won its first Big Ten Con- ference basketball championship. His ability as a coach was further illus- trated in the success New Trier's teams have had since Mr. Childs took the coaching reins of basketball. During Coach Childs' regime New Trier was invited to the National Bas- ketball Tournament at the University of Chicago four times, three of which invitations were accepted. Twice New Trier tied for fifth place in this tour- nament, playing the best teams in the country. New Trier has won the champion- ship of the Suburban League in the heavyweight division three times and in the lightweight division a number of times. In the eighteen years during which Mr. Childs coached, the school has won the district championship no less than eight times and the sectional tourna- ment, more recently organized, once. Last year New Trier won the Sub- urban League heavyweight champion- ship and held second place in the light- wearht division. The heavies met such opposition as Morton, the National Champions, whom they defeated on their home floor by five points and lost on Morton's floor by three points. Led by such a fine coach as Mr. Childs, the school has won the respect of all the teams it has met and New Trier's record is due to a great extent to the superior coaching given it by Mr. Childs. : With the rearranged system, Mr. Childs expects to be able to place the athletic and physical education pro- gram upon an even more satisfactory basis for both students and coaching and training staffs. He will be able to devote more time to the administra- tion of the departments as a unit and will be less bound by detail, which is expected to result in even better re- sults than have heretofore been pos- sible. Mr. Grater, the new head basketball coach, came to New Trier last year with an excellent record. He was All- American basketball guard in 1922, captain of the Wabash "Wonder Five" of the same year, and was also on the baseball and football teams at Wabash college for three years.
