Now North Western Road Opens Member North Shore Relations Committee The Winnetka Chamber of Com- merce is now a member of the North Shore Relations Committee, compris- ing Evanston, Wilmette and Glencoe Chambers of Commerce. The Cham- ber, at its meeting last Monday eve- ning voted unanimously to join the committee and appointed R. F. Doepel, R. C. Papa, William T. Wersted, R. H. Schell, and Earl Weinstock as its five representatives. The North Shore Relations Commit- tee is made up of five members from cach of the Chambers of Commerce in the various north shore villages, the object of the inter-community organi- zation being to consider matters of general interest to the north shore area. Dr. Allen D. Albert, editor of the Evanston Evening News-Index, ad- dressed the meeting Monday evening on "A Chamber of Commerce in Win- netka." He stressed the importance of the Winnetka Chamber affiliated with the Chambers of Commerce north and south of it and also urged the members to keep informed on all matters of importance in their community and in the county and state, as well. Vast New Freight Terminal The Chicago and North Western railway announces the opening on Oc- tober 1, 1927, of its new sixteen mil- lion dollar freight terminal, transfer house, and classification yards, located at Proviso, Ill, on its main line, thir- teen miles west of Chicago. With the tremendous growth of the Chicago area and its importance as a transportation center and railroad ter- minus, there came the necessity of greater transfer and interchange facili- ties, not only for present needs, but to take care of future growth, and in full realization of the situation this vast project was conceived by the company, it is pointed out. The immensity of the improvement can be perhaps better visualized by the following facts when it is stated the total area is 1,250 acres; the track capacity, 26,000 cars and the through cars that can be handled per day is 15,000. The Proviso transfer house for less than carload freight has an area under one roof of 21 acres. Its length is 1,420 feet; width, 720 feet, and it pro- vides for daily capacity of 700 cars of merchandise.
