Comedy Abounds in "Easy Mark," New Evanston Show Comedy abounds in the persons of most of the characters in "The Easy Mark," this week's production of the Evanston players. Ernest Woodward, leading man; Lew J. Welch, character player, and Jack Reidy all play comedy characters and make the show live up to its New York reputation, Mr. Woodward as Sam Crane is the easy mark for which numerous million dollar corporations are named--but only in his mind. He is the dreamer who thinks only of doing "something BIG," and is let in on the ground floor on an oil deal. The gushers, which the promoter, Billy Coleman, played by Gene Clarendon, described so glibly, fail to come above the ground. Throughout, the players throw them- selves into the production so sincerely that the entire audience is with them-- especially at the climax in the second act--the supposed discovery of oil The promoters get their due finally, but fortunately the ending does not necessitate the magic appearance of oil as is so often the case in comedy- dramas. The denouement follows an- other and better course. Mr. Welch as Amos, Sam, sympa- thetic veterinarian friend, and Jack Reidy, as Joe Paige, abrupt courter of Sam's sister, Hattie, both furnish numerous laughs. Margery Williams, leading lady, is at her best playing the school teacher boarder in the Cranes' small western home, and Karl Way and Clarendon both merit commendation for perhaps the most pleasingly confident stage "Love of Mike" Community House Winn.
