The older methods of character train- ing--preaching, moralizing and spank- ing, and the more recent one of re- moving all authority and allowing the child to follow the inner urge, are giv- ing place to a realization of the im- portance of providing the right situa- tions and stimulations so that the child may develop self control or morality which will function under any condi- tions. This is what Presi'ent Edna Dean Baker of the National Kindergar- ten and Elementary collece told the kinderfarten and elementary teach- ers of Philadelphia recently in a lec- ture on "Character Education for Young Children." Three steps were suogested bv Miss Raker to help the child secure self con- trol: The child must understand why cer- tain behavior is expected of him. He can learn this only throneh evnlanas tion, discussion and evamnle, Tt is too easy to tell the child one thino and do another--then when the child fol- lows the adult's examnle he is punished --i. e.--the child is told not to swear, and the next morning father says stranee and interesting words when his morning paper fails to put in an ap- nearnce. To purish the child if he im- itates these words seems illo~ical, "Proper" and "Unnleacant" must never become svnonymeus in the child's 'mind, Miss Baker told the eroup in explaning the second sten, The child must want to do the richt thine, The desire to do this can be created in him through approval, appreciation and the jov of achievement. Even the most somber adult welcomes appreciation, and to the little child it is even more important, Finally Miss Baker urged the teach- ers to make sure that the ac'ion re- anired of the child was within his physical and mental abilitv. Children often become discouraged because they are forced to attempt things ut- terly beyond their powers, Hub Store to Broadcast Purple-Illini Contest Continuing with their plan of broad- casting all Northwestern football games--The Hub will present a play- hv-play broadcast of tre Illinois- Northwestern game at 1:15 p. m. this Saturday, direct from Dvche stadium over WBBM.
