October 22, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 51 ILLINOIS HEALTH HEAD GIVES FACTS ON RABIES Dr. Isaac Rawlings Issues Report on Results of Laboratory Tests in State Blaming the stray dog for the mis- chief among his own kind and house- hold dogs for transmitting the disease to man, Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, Illi- nois state health director, declared in a statement issued this week that Illi- nois is experiencing the worst hydro- phobia season in years. Contrary to popular opinion, according to the di- rector, rabies is least prevalent in "dog days," the winter and spring yielding many more cases than the summer period. So far this year 58 persons, 136 dogs and 14 other animals have been bitten by dogs known to be rabid, while 484 canine heads have been tested in the laboratories of the state and Chicago health department laboratories. Stray Dogs Responsible "Stray 'mad' dogs bite pet or house- hold dogs, infecting them, and the rabid dog with an owner and home bites the people who get hydrophobia," said Dr. Rawlings. "This is the most usual way in which dogs transmit rabies up to man. Records collected this summer show that home dogs bit 43 of the 58 persons in the state known to have been attacked by 'mad' or rabid dogs while stray dogs were re- sponsible for 97 of the 136 dogs known to have been attacked by rabid dogs. This indicates that the stray or home- less cur, who knows no master's voice, is the primary carrier of hydrophobia although the home dog is directly re- sponsible for most cases in humans. "The laboratories in Springfield have done 226 examinations of dogs heads so far this year, 116 showing positive; the Chicago health department labora- tory has done 175 with 47 positive and the Carbondale laboratory has done 83 with 26 positives. The positive find- ings in Chicago were much greater than usual for recent vears while the number found at Springfield and Car- bondale during August and Septem- her was extraordinarily large.
