The United States Navy band has gone on its way, after playing two fine programs at the Glnecoe school auditorium, a performance for the school children Saturday afternoon, November 5, and one in the evening for those in Glencoe and adjacent towns who thrill to military music. Re- ports on the evening program are that it was magnificently done, with all the flourish of sound and motion that one expects of a band. This band, directed by Lieut. Charles Benter, has been highly praised by President Coolidge, who is allowing the organization to tour the country. The afternoon program was arranged with the view of pleasing school chil- dren, and it did delight them. Bee- thoven's Overture to "Egmont," was the opening number, and it was well done, building up smoothly to a firm climax. As an encore they stepped into a breezy march, "Our Navy," writ- ten ty Mr. Benter. Jean Manganaro, euphoniumist, played the baritone solo in "Beautiful Colorado," the second number. The melody had the majestic grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, and Mr. Manganaro made the most of it, while the band accompanied him with delicacy. "Roses of Picardy," admir- ably suited to the mellow dignity of the euphonium, was given as an encore. "Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," followed, describing the gathering of the warlike Valkyrs, and their wiid flight through the air. Two encores, far removed from Wagner, were of- fered with the amusing readiness with which the band responded to all ap- plause. "The Jolly Coppersmith," one verse of which delighted the kiddies because it was whistled, and "Oh, Doris, Where Do You Live," were on the tail end of the Valkyrs' martial ride. Lend Christmas Atmosphere Santa Claus testing drums, mama dolls and Christmas toys, in "The Toy Shop," made a great hit, and it really was a charming novelty well played. "The U. S. Navy Jazz Band," com- posed of 12 pieces, including the in- evitable banjo, violin, saxophone, metal derbies, closed the first part of the! program with some popular hits. The drummer, with his ridiculous antics, fascinated the children. As for the| jazz, it lacked the so-necessary punch. Excerpts from Victor Herbert's light operas opened the second half of the afternoon, and the band played with a light, pleasing touch, and variations on "The Girl I Left Behind Me," which followed, were carefully done. Another big favorite of the afternoon was the piccolo solo in "The Song of the Nightingale," and "Through the Air," played by Mr. Holly Stanley. The children micmiced him delightedly on imaginary piccelos and gave him the best applause of the afternoon. The program was brought to an end with Strauss' "Roses of the South," and Friedmann's rhapsody, "Slavonic," which was exceptionally well handled. Encores were cheerfully given, as usual, for every number programmed. "The Star Spangled Banner," as stir- ring as anyone would wish, closed the afternoon. Splendid Evening Program The evening's numbers were the Overttire from "Mignon"; the Suite de Ballet from "Coppelia,"" by Delibes; a cornet solo, "Arbucklenian Polka," by Hartman; the Ensemble from "Andrea Chenier"; old southern melidies, "Reminiscences of the Planta- tion"; some jazz; a novelty, "Circus Days," by Alford; excerpts from "Countess Baritza"; a xylophone solo. "Coming Through the Rye"; the old favorite, "The Beautiful Blue Danube"; and Liszt" "The Second Hungarian Rhapsody." Elect G. T. Hellmuth to National Safety Office G. T. Hellmuth, 1705 Forest avenue, Wilmette, general claims attorney for the Chicago, North Shore and Milwau- kee railroad, was elected treasurer of the National Safety council at the six- teenth annual safety congress held re- cently in Chicago. Mr. Hellmuth's election to this high position comes after years of active interest in safety work, both in the Chicago Safety council and the national organization. Mr. Hellmuth is prominent in Wil- mette civic affairs and was formerly a member of the Wilmette Board of Appeals on Zoning. 5Y,% MONEY Have funds to loan on choice im- proved North Shore Suburban resi- dence property at 51409], interest.
