Just an hour and yet what a different world we now were in. Resting under a pleasant grove with heavy overhang- ing verdure along the river-bank we stood quite possibly at the very spot where Elijah threw his mantle on Elisha or where John baptized the Lord. It was beautiful enough for either scene. To care for the unend- ing streams of pilgrims, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols, Greeks, lived there with their family. They had everything we need- ed, bathing suits again, a great sac row-boat, cool drinks and comfortable chairs. They were earnest Christians themselves, members of the Orthodox Church, and they gave us every care. Visit to Monastery Ruins In an hour we were off again. The road soon led us beyond the borders of the narrow jungles that skirts the Jordan banks out into the desert. Winding up the cliff we came to St. John's monastery high above the val- ley, and affording an extensive view of the Jordan's course. The monastery was in ruins. The earthquake of July 11 had done it. At the spot I chose in which to take a picture, I noticed that the dusty loam was hard and caked and cracked. I called the dragoman. "It must have been very wet here recently," I said. And then he told me that there in the middle of that barren waste, the monks told him that while the earthquake was in progress fountains of water in many places spouted as much as twenty feet into the air. Strange country we were in. Our next stop was Jericho. There are three Jerichos. New Jericho, Old Jericho and New Testament Jericho. They are all made possible by the abundant springs of water that some earthquake occurring before Elisha's time at least brought into permanent service. New Jericho is a primitive, unkept place. I was glad that our itinerary did not call for stopping at its "Tourist Hotel." Old Jericho a mile away is really nothing now but a wide expanse of tropical groves and gardens whose abundant products we had passed along the road early that morning. We saw our first bananas growing there. And climbing part way up the hill-side above Elisha's foun- tain, we viewed the excavated walls of the ancient city of the Old Testa- ment days. The New Testament Jericho was a little off our road and was seen only at a distance. The Joy of a Shower Bath By eleven o'clock we were climbing up toward sea-level again, glad enough to think that before lunch we could have a shower bath to get the Dead Sea and the rinsing water out of our smarting pores. But there was one more stop--the suburb of Bethany, just across the Mt. of Olives from Jerusalem. Here it was that Jesus used to stay at night. He was always a commuter when he visited Jerusalem. We saw where Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus might have lived. We saw the trail over which Jesus went to town in the morning and re- turned at night during the days of that last week--a trail that is still used. The air was fresh and breezy in Bethany. It would be a good place to live. There could have been no better place to chose so memorable a half day as we had just enjoyed.
