60 WINNETKA TALK November 12, 1927 Mecca for Artists of Music Realm Temple of Music, St. Leu-La-Foret USIC lovers of the north shore enjoyed a unique privilege this week in hearing one of the truly great artists of the era, Wanda Landowska, pianist and harpsi- chordist. The term "great" as empoyed in this sense, bears more than a casual significance, for Mme. Landowska holds with easy grace and absolute security a place in the charmed cir- cle with such genuinely great lights as Kreisler, Rachmaninoff, and Paderewski. Great is Landowska not merely as a musician, although in the popular mind that phase of her genius has perhaps overshad- owed in the popular mind somewhat her rare qualities as a teacher. Unique in the realm of music is that mecca of the artists, Landow- ska's "Temple of the Music of the Past," a vertitable shrine dedicated to musical art, situated in her gar- dens at St. ILeu-La-Foret, near Paris. Of this remarkable institu- tion, frequented by artists the world over, Theodore Lindenlaub writes as folows in "Le Temps" of July 12, 1927 : "Who will describe the charm of a course of interpretation by Wanda Landowska at St. Leu. The thousand whispers of the sweet scented garden rush through the open windows. The class is coming to an end . . .. the hour is golden. Before setting behind the slender, dark pines, the sun scatters large discs of fiery glow, here and there, in the Concert hall. The school of St. Leu, swarming with students and listeners, has as much of the workshop as of the Concert hall. "All glances are concentrated upon the stage which is built low, giving the hall an atmosphere of intimacy. We see the outlines of two concert grands, a harpsichord, a clavichord, a square piano. The hour is devoted to a Mozart of the sonorous quality of the harpsicord, of the "hammerclavier"; of Mozart's touch. At length, and with precise details, she tells how one should trans- fer the sonority of the old instruments to the modern piano and with what touch to achieve perfect interpretation of style. Wanda Landowska "A pupil, a violinist, plays a Bach Sonata. A singer, whose voice is per- fectly placed comes here to learn how to phrase a recitativo and an Aria of an Italian master. A pianist pupil plays a piece by Couperin and learns how to execute the appoggiaturas, thrills and all these countless ornaments which are inextricable enigmas to the musicians of today. Wanda strives to make her pupils feel independent and not that she is ever- lastingly indispensable to them. She makes all matters clear with the gen- erosity of one who does not keep jeal- ously to herself all she has learned. Gives Unsparingly of Self "It is a lesson unsparingly detailed and pitilessly critical, but a lesson dipped in beauty and kindliness. The most severe remarks soften in this mellowing atmosphere of friendship | and harmony. For therein the secret of Wanda Landowska's charm. She gives of herself to one and all. "And I believe that these courses-- chefs d'oeuvre of intelligent pedagogy | --have the power of making us love | above all this Music of the Past; so many of us who love Bach, Handel, Scarlatti and Couperin, instinctively, understand today why we love them. "Because Wanda Landowska's mes- sage is born of innate gifts which en- able her to impart her convictions, her sensations to others--through that sympathy, that human magnetism--the privilege of a few." ; Kindergarten P.
