40 WINNETKA TALK November 19, 1927 NEW TRIER GRID TEAM ONE OF SCHOOL'S BEST Excellent Coaching Staff and Wealth of Material Respon- sible for Success Here They Are--Eleven Elevens of Gridders at New Trier High Editor's Note The accompanying article on success of the New Trier High school football team this season is in reality the introduction to a discussion of the athletic system employed at the township high school. In a succeeding issue of this paper will appear the sec- ond installment of the article By H. A. Armstrong That this year's New Trier grid team is, if not the best, at least one of the best ever produced in the history of the high school is a fact agreed upon by both fans and sports writers throughout the Chicago and north shore area. A decisive victory over y oo Deerfield-Shields by a 19-6 score last Saturday placed New Trier in the lead of all former members of the old sub- A ¢ I | | v vi urban league and established for the ) | | § school a recognized place of distinction * 4 as the strongest prep team in the Chi- cago district. This victory also makes New Trier the favorite over Evanston in the annual Thanksgiving day game which is to be played next week, Deer- field having recently triumphed over Evanston. adc hs VE Season of Victories The New Trier boys started the sea- son with a rush, defeating in quick succession Fenger by a score of 44 to 6; LaGrange, 24-0; Whiting, Ind. 18-14; and Roosevelt High of Chicago by a 39-0 score. In the Waukegan game on October 15, misfortune "won the toss" at every angle and, after a "heart-breaking" game, New Trier emerged holding the short end of a 7-6 score. Although dropping this tilt, New Trier was still credited by fans--without any attempt being made to detract from the credit due Waukegan--with having the ap- pearance of being the stronger of the two teams. New Trier is fortunate this season, as in the past few years, in having an excellent coaching staff. In each of their games they have evidenced a thorough knowledge of football in all of its departments, reflecting much credit upon Head Coach Walter Asch- enbach and other members of the ath- letic department. There is, however, another element which has contributed greatly to the success of the team and has largely accounted for the wealth of material which has been available throughout the present season. Organize New Department About three years ago there was in- stalled under the direction of DeFor- rest Showley of the athletic depart- ment a system which is now known as the Intramural department. Unique to most high school athletic programs and equally unusual in most university circles, this system has since become such an important part of the school program as to warrant its extension to other forms of athletic activity and laying plans for its being made a part of the regular physical education pro- gram. In fact, so far reaching are its potential values and possibilities that it is rapidly earning for itself the key position of having other forms of phy- sical education and sports dependent upon it rather than being in itself of secondary consideration EW TRIER may proudly boast of | the varsity team.
